Firing The One O’Clock Cannon

A few weeks ago, Warren asked if anyone remembered a gun being fired in Greenwich Town Centre at 1.00pm every day to coincide with the time ball up at the observatory. Several people did – and now I have concrete proof of it. Brian has sent me a couple of pictures of his old school friend George Banham, actually firing it.

And of course, we should have known – it was on the Cutty Sark. And now I see these pictures it all comes flooding back – I remember being amazed that such a loud noise could come out of such a small cannon…

The picture at the top is, of course, of the cannon being fired. I particularly love the smoke. The second is where George is ‘sponging’ the barrel with a damp tampion to ensure no embers are left from the firing.

I wonder if they’ll reinstate it when the Cutty Sark finally reopens. Probably not. I daresay someone would moan about the ‘noise pollution.’
