Can You Guess What It Is Yet?

If you’ve been spending any amount of time in Greenwich Park recently you may have noticed these strange little tufts of what looks like broom bristles sticking out of the soil, and either not thought any more of them (like me, ahem) or like Dave, who sent me this picture (taken by the Rose garden), actually asked someone what they were.

Dave asked a guy ‘testing the soil’ and

“As I suspected they are marking out the Olympics event course and he said they have used these instead of fencing it off. As I understand they will then be registering them on GPS before taking them up so they can follow those coordinates when the course is laid. I think if they used fencing people would soon realize what the impact on the park is going to be hence these small almost invisible, until you get on top of them, markers.”

Presumably they’re trying to do this as discreetly as possible and I have to say that I’d seen but not really ‘noticed’ these markers. They’re cropping up all over the park now.

So now you know…

This is such a coincidence as I was walking round the park this weekend noticing these all over the place too and wondering if anyone knew their use! Interesting to know. They looked like fibreoptic cables to me. And yes, they are all over the park now. Close to the roman ruins and down to the boating lake.

Am thoroughly looking forward to all this! It’s a shame we haven’t got a more prestigious event (or just the beach volleyball) but this will still be a superb few weeks. The camera shot from the Observatory down over the venue, MG, the river and Docklands will be one of the greatest of the Games.

Yes, the LOCOG may let us down handing back the park but several of us are ready to get our hands dirty and help out post-Games.

Let those ‘Whinging Brits’ moan, this individual can’t wait.

Crikey – what’s with the conspiracy theories?

Perhaps by choosing the tufts rather than fencing they’re not trying to mislead, they’re going for an alternative to fencing that’s:
    less damaging to the park
    less of an eyesore
    causes less disruption

Ugh. Sometimes all the negativity is just a little OTT – why do we have to assume the organising committee are out to get us all the time?

That’s clearly what LOCOG are doing!

I really don’t understand why some people are always so quick to jump to the most undesirable conclusion. Do they really need to moan and be miserable (and also share it with anyone and everyone else) that much?

Thankfully, TGP and some other blogs are still a refuge from such exasperating tedium.

    For now.

    Your message is tedious.

Do we have any suggestions for comedy courses?

We could all get together and rearrange the tufts in a lovely figure of 8.

  8. Frank says:

There are some of these in the flower garden – is that part of the course??

Seems so. There’s and article in this weeks Mercury with more details.
