Pleasaunt Moments - And An Odd Proposal
Back on Saturday I was worrying whether or not the Friends of East Greenwich Pleasuance would be holding their annual carol shindig this year after the indifferent weather of past occasions.I'm delighted to say they ARE doing the whole festive thing - and it looks bigger than ever, with performances from the Halstow Community Choir (of which I've never heard before...) leading a singalong and the splendid Los Dawsons (I was hoping to nick a nice piece of footage from MySpace to show those of you who aren't converted yet but the account's suspended - you'll just have to live with pics of them at their blog ) playing festive bluesy stuff.
There will be the usual mulled wine and mince pies, and Father Christmas arrives at 2.15pm.
I'm sure much of the afternoon's conversation will revolve around a rather odd proposal which is being put forward as part of the Olympic Legacy funding - installing an 'outdoor gym' in the Pleasaunce - at the cost of fifty grand.
The Friends are a bit surprised at this generous but unsought proposal (they hadn't heard anything about it) and they're soliciting for reactions, wondering whether money like this couldn't be spent a bit more usefully elsewhere (though they accept that the cash will have to go on something sport/fitness related) like upgrading the Bothy/One O'Clock Club or play equipment (though of course they are very kiddie-oriented places and not going to get wobbly adult Phantoms into shape...)
I confess I'm a bit nonplussed about it - in some ways it's good - having money spent on a park seems like a good thing - but in other ways I worry - only a few weeks ago there was concern that putting a temporary farmers market there might somehow be 'disrespectful' - this would mean removing more green grass for hard standing to take specially tough gym equipment - which I have to say isn't wildly attractive .
I don't really buy the argument that people would be embarrassed to use such kit in public - people who are that shy probably wouldn't make it to a regular gym anyway, and nor do I think that it would "attract noisy kids into the park at night after the gates are shut" - surely the answer there is in the statement - the gates are shut - I can't see yobbos making all that effort to get in just to play on the fitness equipment.
I'm not going to march to the barricades over this - I'm not sure I care too much but I do think it needs a bit of talking about, and the worry about using up yet more green space for general 'stuff' is, IMHO, valid.
What do you think the cash should be spent on (given it has to go for sporty things)?

There's an open air gym in Charlton Park next to where the athletics track used to be.
It seems quite popular and is well used.
So Muscle Beach like in Santa Monica / Venice Beach is coming to The Pleasaunce. A strange juxtaposition- but nothing wrong with providing sports facilities. There's a special sturdy basketball court at the bottom of Maryon Park which also seems to be busy.
I don't feel strongly either way about this particular proposal.
I'm just interested to know whether this constitutes the promised "consultation" with local residents as to how legacy money is to be spent.
The sort of consultation I had in mind was more open-ended, with local groups, charities etc being able to bid for legacy funding for sport/fitness/Olympic inspired projects.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Creekside8 - I agree. But I think this "consultation" would have the danger that it gets spent on something WE as residents want and not what they the COUNCIL want. Remember - the crucial thing is to have something big and colourful that politicos can be photographed next to/on for Greenwich Time... there is an election coming up, after all!
Anon, I agree - EGP needs careful protection, it is not Muscle Beach! What a shame that we can't repair and add to existing facilities. Looking at the horrible weather today, I wonder how used it will be and whether this is not the latest fad.
Oh i'm being far to active today but similarl to my orchard suggestion could the money not be spent on another park the pleasurance is already perfect and definately doesn't need a gymn (though *cough* the Mycene Road park needs something) - but upgrading the 1 o'clock club might be the way to go - and its used by schools for sports as well so investing in sport for the next generation etc etc
Just a thought-Glenister Green would probably offer a better home for the open air gym.
The member of Clan Anon is absolutely right to remind us of the nature of the Pleasaunce- a quiet and atmospheric park indeed.
Glenister Green is just the spot for parading an absurd and aggressive trophy dog and displaying bulging biceps while pumping iron in a display for the passing busses.
Re. the gates are shut comment - Phantom you clearly don't live bordering the Pleasaunce. Kids do climb in after hours, some years are noisier than others (depending on the kids) but in summer it's a nightly occurance.
How about a park like St alfege gardens? It desperately needs funds- not only to repair the shoddy ball park and play equipment but to give the park a purpose and sense of pride.
St alfege park also suffers greatly with people climbing in at night but I imagine that if something like this was put in the park then the council might finally sit up and take notice - ie, repair the broken fences where they climb in! After all, it won't look good in Greenwich time when the new outdoor gym/Olympic legacy gets vandalised!
Where can I find more info re this project/legacy? I'd love to see if St alfege gardens could get involved if the pleasaunce feels it's not right for them.
Lula - If you get in touch with Matt Wall who is Chairman of the Friends group maybe he can point you in the right direction. This is the website

People are coming up with much better suggestions already!
Does anyone know if there is an official channel for suggesting ways in which legacy money (which is in fact our money)can be allocated? or is it just a matter of writing to the council leader and receiving indefinite replies?
Being more of the couch potato/ curling up with a good book type I'm not that bothered about money going to sporty things, but if that is the way it is to be allocated, I think local people should have their say.
Ava - you are quite right: please email Matt Wall of the Friends of EGP or leave a note in the Pleasaunce cafe (there's a noticeboard with envelope for suggestions).
If people don't want it in EGP the Friends are in touch with their St Alfege counterparts, so we can tip them off! We do need feedback and suggestions from people...
Once again, Glenister Green is the ideal place. Visible, on the main road (London Marathon course), GG is an under-used public space etc.
