Greenwich's Third Ghost Bike

Sue's sent me the saddest photo I've seen this Christmas time. It's the ghost bike for Stella, who died after that accident at the junction of Vanbrugh Hill/Woolwich Road a week or so ago.

My thoughts are with her family - Christmas time has to be the worst time of all to lose someone. I know I sound like a right old fusspot today, worrying about black ice and snow - but please, lovely Phantom Cyclists - take care. Don't become a ghost, okay?

I met a cousin and friends of Stella's last week while they were there placing the wreaths you see behind where the bike now is. I was shocked not by the death in itself but by the silence - no press or media coverage. The only people who picked up on the story were greenwich.co.uk who got the story from this blog. I found myself wondering whether - if I ended up going that way - the same silence would meet my death. Unpleasant thoughts.

Now, back into stuck-needle mode: never undertake a lorry near a left turn even if it is not signalling. (Turning the steering wheel doesn't need indicators.)

Terrible news to find out she'd died, I think a ghost bike is a very fitting memorial / warning.

Keep your needle stuck on this one Marmoset...

I, too would like to add my condolences to the friends and family of the latest tragic loss due to an accident in Greenwich. It is terrible to lose someone in this way at any time of year, but at Christmas I'm sure it must feel worse.
I would also like to send my sympathies to the Lorry Driver. I know I will invite all sorts of comments but I'm sure he didn't set out in the morning to kill someone. And he too deserves a little thought.
I used to drive buses around the City and I know how difficult it is to see all around your vehicle at all times. I have even seen cars trying to slide up the inside of left turning vehicles (My Double Decker included) even though they have their indicators flashing. I think every driver should spend at least one lesson learning how far out a large vehicle turning left has to go to be able to turn the corner without mounting the kerb.
I really think we should deal more with the Road Discipline in this country. It is appalling. Only today Myself and a friend were trying to push a broken down car around the A102 Underpass. We nearly got run over several times by drivers not paying attention to what was going on in front of them.
Please let's have some common sense on our roads and a little less impatience!!!
God, I'm beginning to sound really old and grumpy.......must go and lay down in a darkened room for a couple of hours......

Another horrible death and just a quarter mile from where the Polish cyclist was killed earlier this year.

As a commuting cyclist I'd have to fully endorse the very apt remarks made by Marmoset & Dazza.

I'd also like to praise TGP without which this tragic event would have had next to no coverage.

Very sad, especially as it seems to have gone so unremarked.

I also noticed on Sunday that the ghost bike on the Woolwich Road/A102 flyover junction has been removed, though some flowers and other stuff still remained.

There's a very informative entry on Wikipedia in regard to the phenomena of ghost bikes:

I for one think it's worng to put up a ghost bike without obtaining the families permission first.

I echo the sentiments of "Anonymous" and would also add that at this point in time, the cause of the collision has not yet been established - please spare a thought for the family

Does anyone know why the ghost bike nder the flyover has been removed?

I would assume that the one for Stella was the one at the flyover?

The bike for Stella is at the foot of Vanbrugh Hill where she had her tragic accident

Oh no, please not another.
I'd actually seen the flowers when - following an earlier post from TGP - I'd gone down to that part of Greenwich to see what was happening with the former pub The Old Friends.
I hadn't know the story at the time (as said here, it does seem oddly under-reported) and it's very saddening to now find it was another cyclist.
Condolences to her family and friends.

Dave, Yes, I think they've now taken down the one at the flyover and now that is the one for Stella at vanbrugh hill.

Hi, it is very worrying what is happening on the ever-busy Woolwich and Trafalgar Roads. And it is even more disappointing the inability of local authorities to do something about it. I have just published a photo-book dedicated to the memory of the Polish woman who died in May.
You can view it here: http://kiddingthecity.org
There are pictures of the ghost bike (which unfortunately is now gone).

And now this other one....

The death of a second cyclist on Greenwich Roads is very sad, and something which should make the council hang their heads in shame. While neigbouring boroughs like Lewisham are busy creating safe routes for cycling, Greenwich does little. Indeed, Councilor Alex Grant has supported the illegal closure of London Cycle Network Link 59 between Charlton Road and the Old Dover Road.
