Catteries And Doggeries

Kate asks:

"I wondered if you knew of any reputable catteries/boarding kennels in or near the SE10 area? I can't for the life of me find any and with it fast approaching the Christmas holiday season, I am beginning to panic."

The Phantom replies:

I have never had need for such a place - and it's such a personal thing you really do need to get a recommendation. By googling I found Sereta in Orpington, Moggie Minders in (appropriately) Catford and Canada Farm near Bluewater, but I have no personal experience of any of them.
There are various all-purpose agencies that do chores for people - everything from office filing to ironing to dog-walking - I was sent details of such a service setting up in Greenwich some time ago but I can't for the life of me find them in the cough 248 cough outstanding emails that I haven't dealt with yet. I'm not proud of my backlog - and I promise that I will get round to dealing with the starred mail in my inbox, guys - but for now, if the service that sent me the info cares to contact me again (I seem to remember two sisters...) then I'll pop them up here.

In the meanwhile, all you catty/doggy people - any recommendations for Kate?

Hi, I left my cat Smilla at Red Lion Cattery (Shooter's Hill) recently and all was well - professional service and Smilla returned a happy puss.

Red Lion cattery near Shooters Hill - recommended. They have chickens for the cats to watch ('Cat TV'). About £6 per mog, per day.

Another recommendation for the Red Lion Cattery here, although our lovely cat Jimmy is now residing at the great cattery in the sky.

We also used Walkies and More who visit your cat at home whilst you are away if that's better for you.

Walkies and more are lovely and one of them is based up on Plumstead common.

They are as vital a part of our holiday plans as travel insurance.

They will drop you a text to say everything is ok after the first visit and keep a log of when they popped in and what the cats were up to when they visited.

Another vote here for walkies and more. Its a regular local service (I see them round Greenwich lots) if you prefer to leave your pet in the comfort of its home. It is usually the same person visiting each day too which is good for a bit of familiarity. They are also listed with all the registered pet carers boards too if you want piece of mind.

We've used Caroline three times; our cats seem to have always been well looked after in our absence.

Can recommend Moggie Minders, but recently I get someone to just visit my house daily, not much more expensive and the animals are much happier.

We've used Caroline and she's very good. The cats are happier being at home and it's good having someone come in and switch lights on etc. Caroline will also water plants etc.

I hear that a few of the local Chinese takeaways take in cats...

We use Steve from meridian Cats and he is very good. He covers the Greenwich Area and spends half an hour with the cat each day.

The website can be found here:

Another vote here for Steve at Meridian Cats - if you're away for a few days you'll often find a fresh pint of milk in your fridge.

Oh, and happy furballs of course.

I too was worrying about what to do with my moggie over christmas and found most catteries nearby full. I'm using Caroline at SE Dogs and Mogs - she is based in Charlton.
