Live Music, Dead Beer

The Phantom Webmaster has sent me a short but impassioned plea:

"Is there anywhere within the O2 complex that one can get actual beer instead of fizzy keg vileness?"

As regular readers know,I am not a beer-swilling Phantom, but the people I hang out with are, and I'm not aware of any places within the complex that can be bothered to give festival-goers the real thing. I will be delighted to plug anyone who does.

Rod, as our resident Phantom Beer Expert - do you know of anywhere?

Thinking about it though - the place is so bloomin' big - it could easily hold an entire microbrewery if someone had the entrepreneurial spirit to give Foamy-Dome Ale a go. I can't imagine it being unpopular....

Agreed, I always meet up in the Pilot beforehand. Especially in the summer as great to sit outside in the garden rather than inside the O2. Im sure they have a number of beers but I cant be certain.

Yup, The Pilot. Even if they did serve anything decent in the O2 you couldn't be sure how they're looking after it.

I'm sorry - I've never been to the O2. One or two of the restaurants sell Meantime beers, but they're restaurants, not pubs.
If I was gomig to the O2, I'd probably have a couple in the Union first, which now has an expanded beer list, providing the best range of beer (not just Meantime) for many miles around (easily).
Yes, I am biased - I helped compile the list, and wrote the style/tasting notes :-}}

But Rod, why no Meantime Union on draught? A shameful oversight!

Agreed, the union needs to get back on draught ASAP

Sorry, but the Union isn't available on draught at present - bottles are.
However, in our desire to share with our clientele beers (other than our own) that we are excited about ourselves, we are now importing direct from Bavaria the Pils and Dunkel from our friends at Schoenram. These beers are classics, and are not available anywhere else in this country.
The Dunkel is the best of its type that I know, and if you like the Union, you'll love the Schoenram.
I will pass your comments on though.

When I dropped in for an Oktoberfest this evening, I thought I'd try the Schoenram tomorrow. But many of the bar staff also say they get a lot of requests for the Union on draught.

It's a cruel thing to create an addiction and then withdraw the magical substance.

Indeed it is......
Glad you like the Oktoberfest, though, and do try the Schoenram, it's really very good indeed. Your comments will be passed on to the relevant persons, I promise.

The Schoenram Dunkel does hit the spot. But it also hits the wallet!

And Rod, is there any truth in the rumours about change of ownership in a pub on King William Walk?

Paul -
Glad you liked the Schoenram. I haven't heard any rumours about any of the pubs on King William Walk. My source within Inc saya that they haven't got a clue what to to with it now (at one stage they were talking about turning it into a fish and chip shop - seriously) and will probably just eventually re-brand it as another bar that no-one much wants to drink in. Also, I believe that they're a bit tight on the old cashflow front at present, so a make-over may not be particularly high on their list at the moment.

The Tiki Bar, I mean, of course...
