Joan's just sent me a press release that confirms John Roan School will be rebuilt where it stands, and not relocated to the Peninsuala. Read all about it here

Does'nt that say that the governors now wish it to be re-built where it stands - they now need to see whether the council agrees ?

BTW anyone know where I can find last years GCSE results from The John Roan School ?

The decision to move the school was flawed from the outset. I'm happy that the Governors have finally made the right decision.

Last years results were 63% A*-Cs. Up from 46% in 2007. Pretty good going nay?

Yeah not bad - what about the all important % for A-C's including Maths + english?

The Governors may have an interesting challenge on their hands with the main building on the Maze Hill site. The architect is said to be Banister Fletcher, who wrote the definitive book on architecture. Does anyone know what the listing (if any) is?

Banister Fletcher? Blimey. Are you sure? I never thought the building was impressive enough to have been built by anyone as eminent as that.

I'vehad a quick check and I can't see that it's listed. Perhaps he was a better historian than he was architect? Or is that sacrilege?

Yes, Banister Fletcher and Percy B Dannatt (building c. 1926, opening ceremony 1928). Doubt if this one has been thought of as worthy of listing (though parameters change over the years, but other BF buildings certainly have been listed.

I'm sure the rebuild will only be the modern building on the Westcombe Park site

I'm not sure you're right. What's being talked about at the moment is building on both sites. The Maze Hill site will, of course, retain its facade and other features, but I think pretty radical changes are planned behind this.

And Seamus is right, by the way: after a period in the doldrums, the school is really pointing in the right direction now – rapidly improving exam results, a headteacher who's doing all the right things, and a really good set of teachers in the main, too. It's becoming the school to go to!

There are statements regarding the governors' decision, from the Council and Nick Raynsford, over here:
