The Advent of Advent

Out a-haunting last night, I spotted the cherry-pickers out in force, putting up this year's Christmas lights. None of the upside-down squiggles of last year, jolly as they were, this year's look to be globes of festivity. It all seemed to be going quite well; I reckon it will all be in place for Friday's big switch on.

The usual minimalist Christmas Tree will brighten up the windswept gloom on Cutty Sark Gardens - its simple maypole of fairy lights is a winner for me (I know not everyone likes it.)

I didn't get a pic as it was still in pitch darkness, but I did briefly pass it as I wanted to get a nosey at the River Bar and Grill, which I've heard rumour is opening this weekend.

The bar area is definitely in place and there are some chairs and tables in random-ish sort of arrangements, though there's also still some scaffolding up there. I can't get any more information as I have searched in vain for any kind of email/website for the place, though if the food and atmosphere work, this could be a stunning venue, especially in the summer months.

I remember a long while back that Kieron who's behind all this, promised to invite Phantom readers to the opening. I can't email you Kieron - but you know where I am - and we're all gagging to know what this place is going to be like (hint, hint...)

Coolio, looking forward to seeing these at the weekend.

Might indulge in some mulled wine while I'm in the market too.

I went past the other day and it was a hive of activity. I really hope its a nice place! Always good to have a few 'off-the-tourist-trail' places :)

The website has the bar down by the Cutty Sark pub and the old power station (i think this relates to the post code) but I thought wood wharf was on the other side of greenwich?
Can anyone shed any light on this?

You're right, Anon of 17:48, they've put the wrong place on their webpage. They do give the address though as Horseferry Place, with varying spellings of Greenwich:

''RIVERBAR AT GREENICH :: Unit B. Horseferry Place :: Greenwhich :: London :: SE10 9BT''

Let's hope their chef pays more attention to detail.

I'm confused then as I thought there was also a bar slated to open in the complex next to the Cutty Sark pub. Last time I peered through the window (on Friday night) there were chairs and tables all around the place.

I assumed this was the web site for that soon-to-be establishment but you're right, Horseferry place is definitely on the Deptford side of Greenwich. Hmmmm...?

work on the site next to the power station seems to have ground to a halt several months ago - it has pretty much got 'credit crunched' written all over it. If I remember correctly, this is the bar that Kieron referred to (and his estimated opening was May 2009 . . .)

I just had a lunchtime wander by the bar - the one at Wood wharf, Horseferry Place, that is - there's a lot of work going on (at least 7 vans and cars parked on the riverfront pedestrian area); and it really looks like a rush finish. I asked one of the workmen when it was going to open and he told me it was opening on Saturday - so 28 November. The lad even told me I could go in and have a look around - I didn't bother because I could see by looking through the windows that I wouldn't get much of an idea what it would look like when finished. Besides, why go in when they're not serving?

The one near the cutty sark pub, just by collington street has been vacant for months. They moved tables, chairs and kitchen equipment in and subsequently abandoned it. It hasnt changed since so i guess the owners upped and left. Shame because its a nice setting and has a lovely patio area at the front that would be ideal for summer.

It certainly seems like the Horseferry Place establishment is going for a 'quiet' opening then as its the first ive heard about it opening on Saturday.

They obviously are listening... Map has been updated on the website and a misspelling of Greenwich has been corrected, however, the page title (the one the browser shows up top somewhere - depending on your browser preference) is:
River Bar & Grill :: Grenwhich London

Now, that's a spelling of Greenwich I have never seen!

Of course - but they're not very good - the light levels were too poor to get anything really good.

Open the picture by clicking on it, then right-click on it again, and choose "save picture as..." That should do it...

You were all working like Trojans there - nice job!
