Rigged Out

Idris asks:

"Any idea what this is? It is in the river near the Cutty Sark (pub). Not sure how long it's been there, not more than a couple of weeks I think, or I would have noticed it."

The Phantom has absolutely no idea.

I agree it can't have been there long - I only went past a few days ago - though of course the Thames Path (still) gets cut up at that point while the Lovells Wharf development goes on (and on.)

I wonder if it's monitoring pollution or something, to do with the demolition of the Syrol plant a few metres downriver?

Any ideas, folks?

Not sure but a very similar contraption has also until recently been in the river by St George's Wharf in Vauxhall

I saw it being towed along the Thames into place early last week. This of course doesn't answer the question of what it is. Perhaps they'll strike oil...

It's a jack-up barge owned by Fugro Seacore, they have been working on various things along the length of the Thames for a year or so now. As Tom says, you might also have seen them working next to Blackfriars Bridge, Vauxhall Bridge and also further down round the peninsula - they drill into the riverbed to take cores for ground investigation purposes, to test the soil and find out what's below ground before they build on it, and to locate underground services, tunnels etc. They also install piles (foundation supports for bridge piers for example) and do all sorts of other work. The barge can be moved easily from one place to another by lifting the 'spuds' (or legs) up and then sailing the barge. The work they are doing at the moment is for Thames Water's planned Tideway Tunnels http://www.thameswater.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/corp/hs.xsl/9365.htm

Thanks Deptford Dame - I am getting enquiries from residents - and asked Greenwich Planners - they said ask PLA - and they said they were going to ask their launch, and haven't got back to me yet. BUT the riverfront archaeologist Duncan Hawkins last night at the Industrial history meeting said the same as you. Which is what I thought it was in the first place.
Its a pity the Tideway Tunnel can't be used for all the services like the original intercepting sewers under the Victoria Embankment.
- but there you go!

- so thanks PLA!

The only oil coming out of Greenwich is that with which Our Glorious Leader uses to smarm his way out of tricky situations.

Exit Persued etc

I am not not finger wagging.

You are making cheap remarks, if you have a comment to make about the local authority and it's leadership, by all means go ahead and we can all discuss it
