Fortean Phantom
Today I bring you something very odd indeed, courtesy of Haydn in Notting Hill.Greenwich has the spooky honour of being the venue for one of the most famous 'ghost' photographs ever - the Ghost of the Tulip Stairs in the Queens House. Curiously, the Queen's House is in this photograph too, taken by Haydn on Boxing Day last year, but only, he tells me, scrutinised a week or so ago. Could it be a rival to the famous Tulip Phantom? Who can tell. I present it to you today, for your consideration - Haydn - and myself - await your thoughts - especially the photographers and paranormal enthusiasts among you...
You'll probably have to click on the images to get them big enough to really see what I'm talking about here. Such is Blogger.
We're talking about the funny little dwarf-like character who appears to be hanging around the flowerbeds in a suspicious manner. Here - this is what I mean:
If you look, he's much, much smaller than the 'mortal' couple striding along next to him, and much fuzzier. With not an awful lot of imagination it's possible to make out a frock coat, wig and rather florid face and hand, though Haydn points out that the shoulder's at a bit of an odd angle. The character's cane/sword is the brightest thing about him - and oddly, if you fiddle with the contrast button on the picture, it's also the only part of the photo that's completely burned-out.He looks like a painting - if it wasn't for the fact that it's a digital pic, I'd think it was one of those old double exposures that used to happen occasionally with film. I even wondered if he was a cardboard cut-out left over from an exhibition, though what it would be doing in a flowerbed on Boxing Day is anyone's guess.
Haydn wondered if it could be the tragic Admiral Byng, whose ghost is said to walk the Old Royal Naval College, but I'm not convinced - Byng was a prisoner in a very specific part of the then Greenwich Hospital, which had nothing to do with the Queen's House; I can't imagine he'd have been allowed to wander around the park.
I guess a possibility could be a Greenwich Pensioner - several of them are supposed to haunt the area, and their uniforms were of a much older period than the one in which they lived.
Haydn sent me the hi-res of this, which, sadly, I can't reproduce here, but I showed it to several people who know more about both phtotography and ghosts than me and I've had a mixed reaction. Some are convinced it's a fake, but can't tell exactly how, others are more open to other interpretations. Haydn tells me the photo is untouched, save for the obvious red box and a lightening of 8%.
Here is a slightly fuzzy enlargement of the strange, creepy little fellow:

I spent some time peering at it myself. It's curious that the dark area behind him is as fuzzy as the ghost itself, when much of the other greenery is sharp, but there are a lot of trees around there, and it's possible it's in shadow.
I did go and have a peek at the actual place, but stupidly forgot to bring a copy of the picture with me, so wasn't able to exactly pinpoint the spot again - besides, being camera-less just now (not that I'm going on about it or anything...) I couldn't have taken a pic anyway. He seems to be at a lower level than the current flower bed, but that's no surprise - it would have been raised several feet by generations of gardeners applying a thick layer of manure every year. If anyone with a camera's going near that part of the park, I'd love a picture of that spot...
But what do you think? Have you any ideas of what - or who - this could be? Were you in Greenwich Park on Boxing Day? Did you see anything weird? Are you the happy couple in the photo? Did you see anything strange? Are you an expert on paranormal photography? Or, for that matter, any kind of photography?
What do you make of this picture? I confess I'm stumped...

Child on a metal scooter, wearing a coat, scarf etc?
Anonymous is spot on I think. The child has paused on the scooter and is looking back, making sure she's not gotten too far away from her parents or such. I don't think they are the couple following - who seem to be at a pace - but are probably out of sight.
I did wonder for a moment if it was the large homeless lady who spends much of the day sleeping in the quieter corners of the park,
That's what I thought.
Oh come on, you lot surely have a more vivid imagination than that?!
A purple jellyfish eating a discarded anchor?
I have a work colleague who is an expert on digital imagery and the paranormal. She has studied this image and was available to confirm that the picture is actually of a ghost…so that’s settled then.
yep, makes sense. a smaller-than-norml person on a path in a park in broad daylight, with a stick.
must be a ghost. can't see how it could be anything else, really.
Hmm... Greenwich.co.uk's Halloween post also mentions a Greenwich dwarf.... coincidence?
Hmmm.
I've seen things like this on the telly.
Note how the face is like that Rolling Stones LP cover where they pulled cloth over their faces, the difference here being that behind this piece of cloth is not a face, but a grinning skull.
It's definitely an apparition... probably a harbinger or possibly a poltergeist.
I wonder did anyone in the Queens House see her/him or it ?
Perhaps they only have a skeleton staff working over Christmas...........I'll get my coat
So all agree that it's the ghost of a small hooded dwarf holding a metal scooter.
Like a modern day Don't Look Now..
As Anonymous and Latelygay said it is almost certainly a child trying out her / his scooter from Santa.
I've never seen or heard of a ghost and I'm not sure that I really believe in such pheomena, however I vividly recall the chill of the MR James stories adpated for film when I was younger.
I was even quite spooked in a kindly way by Robert Donat in The Ghost Goes West!
Could it be a coat on a gardener’s spade, or Bilbo Baggins with a light sabre?
If neither and is not an altered image then as to “ghosts” of Greenwich there is a better candidate than Byng (who was not short of stature).
The Queen’s House was begun for Anne of Denmark and completed for Henrietta Maria. One possible candidate would be Sir Jeffrey Hudson who was Henrietta Maria’s “Court Dwarf”.He seems to aged around 62 when he died (see info at end of posting)
Movement of “ghosts” - The site of the Queen’s House has two ley ‘s intersecting in the Great Hall and another two touch the corner of the House and also intersect with the former two in the Park.
Reputedly where leys intersect can be sites of paranormal activity
“Ghosts” are not chained down to the site they may have occupied in life .
Malcom Godfrey’s “Walking Ghostly Greenwich – Ghosts of the Royal Naval College” indicates Byng to be interactive and not confined to the area he was incarcerated in prior to execution
The question as to whether the site of the Maritime Museum has energies within in it is separate from the question as to whether the “Tulip Stairs Ghost” or “Queens House Ghost” photo depicts a paranormal phenomenon or a living person.
Indeed the photo remains a subject of lively debate there being as many supporter’s of it being a “ghost” as those who think it is a member of Museum staff or some one else running up the stairs (who ever it is, by the way, is married as they have a wedding ring on their left hand) and the figure appears 3 times ascending the stairs
The best version is on Mary Evans Picture library site http://www.maryevans.com/ and look for "apparition" the see the Black and white image : Ref: 10002873 Apparition/Queens House

Jeffrey Hudson (1619 – circa 1682) was an English dwarf at the court of Queen Henrietta Maria. He was famous as the "Queen's dwarf" and "Lord Minimus", and was considered one of the "wonders of the age" because of his extreme but well-proportioned smallness. He fought with the Royalists in the English Civil War and fled with the Queen to France but was expelled from her court when he killed a man in a duel.
He was captured by Barbary pirates and spent 25 years as a slave in North Africa before being ransomed back to England. I've been keen to do soemthing about Hudson for some time, Anon - but I can't find anything whatsoever that connects him with Greenwich. His dates are all wrong - he was away for most of the time when the Queen was here, and nothing in any book I've ever read about him implies that he was ever here for anything more than a visit. A shame - as he'd make a great 'Greenwich Person'...
But maybe you know something more?
Hi Mr Phantom re Hudson
I am not sure whether when Henrietta Maria returned to Greenwich as Dowager Queen Hudson may have returned to favour in old age have visited .
I am a new comer to dowsing for Energies but I understand that spirit energies may be drawn to places where they were happy
I include him in my talks on Greenwich since I understand there has been suggestions that one of the "energies" may be linked to him
I would be interested in seeing the original image of the Fortean Ghost
On the subject ghost images you may wish to look at the Museum web site re Queens House ghost as there is an account of a more recent staff sighting of the ghost and information from the 1930's re haunted rooms in QH. Also compare the Museum Photographers mock up of the 1966 Hardy image with the b/w version on mary evans web site.
Best wishes
