Bye Bye Jack-Up, Hello Jack-Up

So - it came, it saw, it fiddled about a bit under the water. The Jack-up barge has just barged past Kathy's Wood Wharf window, and has now docked just off Greenwich Reach:

Here's a view of the construction site - concrete walls were poured yesterday - and soon we'll be losing Kathy's view upriver...

BTW - for those of you who have been asking, December is the new opening date for Wood Wharf Bar and Grill - but, as Kathy says, don't hold your breath...

I'm also curious as to why the barge is parked outside.
Btw, thanks for the insightful reply 'Anonymous Comment 2'.

I am sure that I am being dim here but I am still none the wiser what this construction is for. Any help?

Sorry I should have directed you to the comments on the previous post:

It's a jack-up barge owned by Fugro Seacore, they have been working on various things along the length of the Thames for a year or so now. As Tom says, you might also have seen them working next to Blackfriars Bridge, Vauxhall Bridge and also further down round the peninsula - they drill into the riverbed to take cores for ground investigation purposes, to test the soil and find out what's below ground before they build on it, and to locate underground services, tunnels etc. They also install piles (foundation supports for bridge piers for example) and do all sorts of other work. The barge can be moved easily from one place to another by lifting the 'spuds' (or legs) up and then sailing the barge. The work they are doing at the moment is for Thames Water's planned Tideway Tunnels http://www.thameswater.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/corp/hs.xsl/9365.htm
