Stolen Kit
Warren's one of Greenwich's lovely photographers who sends me amazing shots I couldn't dream of snapping. You may even have had one of his Greenwich calendars on your desk. Sadly this year's calendar may be a little more difficult to create. He writes:
"Last Wednesday I had a break in at home in Mycenae Road and all my camera equipment was stolen. It is Nikon professional equipment and obviously, is my working gear. I was hoping you may be able to spread the news in the hope someone comes across it and also to warn people in the Westcombe Park area that this is happening quite a bit.
We have a downstairs flat and access was through a window at the front which is concealed from the road. Through the glaziers and the police I have been informed of two other such break-ins in the last couple of weeks. It is the holiday period and this happened during the day.
I have had police and forensics around but no prints were detected. A theory of a neighbour is that Wescombe Park station is used as a mode of escape as it is so near. I am going to contact Network Rail to see if they can scan their CCTV for the few hours I was gone last Wednesday. I am also in the process of contacting all the local camera shops and Cash Converters with the missing gear and serial numbers."
The Phantom sympathises, though wishes you luck with Network Rail, Warren. In the past they have been somewhat less than helpful about anything that their users might want to talk to them about - from timetable changes to clearing paths. Allowing a member of the public to look at CCTV images might be construed as going soft on the
But maybe you folks can keep an eye out for any top-range photographic equipment being offered at cheapo prices. And - keep the other eye on your own gear, will you? It may sound selfish but I can't take those pics on my own...

Been a couple of break-ins in the downstairs flat at the house I live in in the last few months alone - I'm on the Standard. Apparently one of the nieghbours had someone with a set of keys they shouldn't have had walk in on them, too! Surely this must be some organized crimewave?
I've seen the aftermath of at least three car window break-ins in the last week or two (around East Greenwich).....and never a sign of the Old Bill.
3 teenagers on bikes caseing cars on Ashburnham Grove late yesterday afternoon. Remember to keep those valuables out of site!
That is the s****iest luck, Warren. You might also want to keep an eye on Gumtree. I've seen camera gear being offered for sale on there and let's just say that seller's are very absent when you enquire about provenance or proof of purchase for the kit they're trying to flog.
We have the same problem at the top of Point Hill. There's fresh piles of broken glass almost every day where cars have been broken into. Of course, keep your valuables out of sight but it's probably the same one or two bastards committing all of the offenses and, with a tiny piece of creative police work, surely they could put a stop to it once and for all...
Wot? Clear up crime and put themselves out of a job???...
Greenwich sandwich, one of the problems with that stretch of Point Hill is that it's very dark. I have spoken with Street Lighting at the council a few times - they agree that side of Point Hill would need another lamp post, but funding is tight etc. It probably wouldn't hurt if someone else gave them a call. I can give you the contacts if you like.
I have been a victim of a break in on my car at the top of Point Hill. 2 tips - obviously do not leave anything that looks valuable, my break in was due to a auxillary cable connecting an Ipod to the stereo left in view and secondly try and park your car at least further down the hill than the Westgrove Lane junction (but have seen the tell tale patch of glass as far down as the junction with King George St). Finally - do report to the police and furthermore I've heard tell of some dealing going on in the Point in the evenings - if you something odd going on, let the police know. Car crime may not be a high priority for them but dealing on their turf certainly is.
After I had my car broken into a few times a couple of years ago I actually marched up to Greenwich nick to demand action. Quite rightly they explained that they have 2 beat bobbies covering most of Greenwich and murder, rape and house breaks etc a much higher priority. What the will do though are stick a few extra patrols on in areas where car crime is shooting up. They did this in my area and the trails of glass did seem to stop appearing so often. In short make sure you always report these crimes however minor they may be.
I live on Devonshire Drive and have frequently been nervous of people who look like they are casing the local area, but yesterday I saw a mounted policeman around for much of the afternoon, and a bobby on South Street this morning. Fingers crossed they are taking things a bit more seriously....?
I was wondering why there was horse dung on Royal Hill!
I thought I'd let people know that a black guy was caught casing the houses on St Johns Park on Thursday afternoon.
A guy in our building saw him looking into our back garden (from the house next door) and confronted him. Apparently he was looking for a black guy called Gary (in our garden???).
Another couple in our building were walking down the street and watched him walk into each of the large houses before he saw them and came up to them, again looking for Gary.
There's not much we can do but keep an eye out - try and get a picture and confront anyone who looks suspicious, and try the police (although the lady in our building did this the day before the house next door was burgled a few Saturdays ago-obviously it can't prevent anything).
Being in a basement flat we're a bit concerned but what can you do if they are so persistent?? Eeek!
