Royal Standard
"We are thinking of buying a property close to the Royal Standard pub on Pelton Road. I was wondering if any of your readers could tell me anything about this pub. I can very few reviews of it on the internet and I'd like to find out if it's a friendly or a rowdy place. I'm also struggling to find out its licensing hours."
The Phantom replies:
Aha - the Pelton Road Estate - part of Morden College's portfolio of Greenwich properties, if memory serves. I love those houses - especially the ones on the left as you're walking towards the river - the sheer size of the windows in comparison to the size of the houses is fab. I also like what people have done with their front gardens along there, though I did get water-bombed by some kids in the block of flats as I walked by a week or so ago. Happily for them, the little buggers missed...
I've never visited the Royal Standard, though I have always had my suspicions about the 'reindeer' on its balcony (Benedict and I decided that it was actually the Lucky Greenwich Dromedary...) To be honest, it looks like a good old fashioned spit-and-sawdust boozer to me - always seems to have old-codger type drinkers outside whenever I pass. I have no idea if it's rowdy or not. I guess the best way to find out the opening hours would be just to ask them...
BTW I've been hearing good things about the Pelton Arms (up the road from the Standard) food recently, though haven't been there myself since it changed hands. When I walked past the other day they were unloading a mechanical bull for a rodeo-themed day...

The landlord of the Pelton seems to be making a real effort to bring some life to the pub: different sorts of music nights/afternoons; free cheeseboard at times; possibly knitting at other times (though I may have misunderstood). Can't comment on the Royal Standard, having never been in, but it looks alright enough.
Royal Standard: Ever seen the pub scene in 'An American Werewolf in London'..?
Good luck.
I lived close to the Royal Standard until earlier this year and am relieved to have moved away. The noise from the pub can be very bad (particularly on karaoke/keyboard night), and the sound of people outside smoking or getting into cars late at night (for some inexplicable reason, the pub has been given an extra hours opening on Friday and Saturday) can be very disturbing, and if you have kids prepare to explain some new, exotic-sounding words to them.
The Standard has had various incarnations over the years, but the days of a smokey backroom full of pool tables and teens are long gone. I went in there a couple of weeks ago for the first time in ages and didn't recognise the place - it has just been extensively refurbished and even serves good real ales now along with a much improved menu. I can't say what weekend nights are like - it was Sunday afternoon when I visited - but I would certainly go back and try it.
Sorry I got a bit mixed up - my last comment referred to the BLACKHEATH Standard, not the ROYAL Standard. Tsk, I'm always letting my standards slip...
I live close to the Standard and the Royal Standard is my local.
The pub has vastly improved from its past incarnations. The current landlord and the previous one have done a lot to make the place a decent place to eat and drink, and get rid of the more unsavoury elements that used to drink there.
The food is pretty good pub fare, the addition of guest real ales has been welcome, and there's a good selection of lagers and wines too. The decor is also more up-to-date, less old-style boozer, more gastropub feel. There's also a small but nice-enough garden out back.
Saturday night now has live acoustic music, while Sunday has a fun pub quiz.
It can get a bit hectic when football is on, but otherwise is never too busy.
While it is not a pub worth travelling miles and miles for, it certainly does me as my local and I'd recommend it to anyone in the area.
Whoops - I seem to have made the same mistake Deptford Dame made...
Pelton Arms is lovely. We go to a knitting night there in Wednesdays, great fun.
All you need to know about the Royal Std is Karaoke from 4pm. Only dedicated publicans go to such lengths. I think it's run by one DJ Dave(?).
I can sometimes here it from my garden a short distance away. Who needs the X factor!?
"the sound of people outside smoking"
They must be particularly loud cigarettes.

This blog's gain is Up The Creek's loss.
The Pelton Road Standard's nicknamed by some the Bog Standard - it's certainly a bit rough and ready inside, and I think those Sunday afternoon karaoke sessions tell you what you need to know about it. I've tumbled out of there very late on Saturday nights after making a berk of myself on the mic... all that said, it's not a Guardian readers' local, shall we say, but the guv'nor is very friendly and they do make an effort in there. Proper backstreet local.
The Pelton's certainly had a kick up the arse in the past few years - lots of live music, and it's a far better pub for it. Hopefully it'll be in a position to capitalise when Lovells Wharf is finished.
I've only heard bad things about the Royal Standard, but in fairness have never been in so cant really make a judgement. I suppose the solution especially if you're committing to buy a place would be to pop in for a drink and see what it's like...
Regarding the Pelton; it's massively improved since the new landlord took over, as previous posters have said, he's making a real effort.
Used to live near the Pelton Royal Standard pub and agree with comments about noise. Karaoke nights a nightmare if you very close to it. Also witnessed a fight outside it about 6 months back. Sorry Ruth.
Now (happily) live near the improved Royal Standard at Blackeath Standard.
Don't live far from the Royal Standard.
I think it looks worse than it actually is to be honest, I've been in a couple of times and they have been nothing but friendly and polite. May well be a bit noisy at times but it is a pub not a library. Perhaps we shouldn't all judge a book by its cover and make up our minds...
Publishers invest a lot in the cover of a book in order to encourage people to go beyond and read it. They don't stick a mangy reindeer on the front and leave it there to rot for years.
Sometimes the cover says a lot about a book...and in the case of the Bog Standard (a benchmark this pub can only aspire to) it says 'stay away...I smell!'
I lived opposite The Standard on Pelton Road until the end of last year. I had nothing but awful experiences. I agree with the comments about the noise created by people effing and blinding, whilst having a fag out the front. Have witnessed many a drunk exit the pub and drive away, usually late at night or after a lock in, which I have also witnessed. The cars of the patrons take up a lot of space on Pelton Road. (Where do these people come from?) Have seen a few instances of violence outside. One time a man put his head through the round window in the door. Delightful. The noise created by the karaoke is absolutely ridiculous and it has been know to start up at anytime, including weekday afternoons. I would recommend double glazing. There is absolutely no consideration for the local residents and it is amazing that neither the Council or Police have taken any action over the disturbances caused by the place.
A local taxi driver told me recently that they..."might as well put a sign on the door saying 'no blacks, dogs or Irishman'..." and that some of its regulars include local criminal gangs.
But maybe he has been barred for bad singing at the karaoke and has a bee in his bonnet.
Royal Standard, Pelton Road!
In a word..NIGHTMARE!!!!
Looking forward to the day it close or clears out the rather dubious, to say the least, clientele.
AVOID!!!!
Stay away as far as you can from this place its worse than some pubs in very deprived areas! Also am stunned that nothing is done to shut this hell hole down for good so that residents paying very deer for their homes here can enjoy living in a relaxed and quiet environment.
I would like to know why all the smokers are not in the back garden?! I guess its better making the lives of residents hell out front with all the noise on the street, breaking glass and fighting.
Double glazing does not work! Best to get triple glazing and air conditioning because you cant risk having your windows open for fresh air.
I just wanted to join in with the Standard/Pelton debate. The Pelton wins hands down. Not only is the beer good but they have a good quiz night on a Tuesday and yes, they do have a Knitting Night every Wednesday from 7.30pm, which may seem a bit strange to some but don't knock it until you've tried it. Geoff (the landlord) has made such great improvements: The Pelton is a hub of the community, with friendly regulars, good food, a darts team, a good ambience and (thankfully) it is not dominated by wide-screen TV. It's the sort of place that you can strike up an interesting conversation at the bar, play a game of backgammon or crib, or settle into one of the comfy sofas and read the Sunday papers.
