Dunno how many of you got this little shiny purple and white leaflet through the door this afternoon, but in case you're even
thinking about going to the latest King William IV Amazing
Credit Crunch Clearance Sale - just don't, okay.
This scam happens about twice a year. They post leaflets through local doors advertising a marvellous cash-only sale of incredible deals - ipods for eight quid, washer-dryers for forty-five - that sort of thing. The leaflets go out after the Trading Standards guys have packed up for the weekend, they make gullible people queue outside the pub just before 2.00pm, then let them in for ten minutes and fleece them.
There are those that said, when I mentioned this before, that if you're greedy and/or stupid enough to fall for such an obvious scam you've got it coming to you - but that's not a valid reason not to at least put a warning up here. People new to the area are often caught on this one and until Trading Standards catch up with these individuals, all I can say is - this is NOT the real deal.
I've scanned the leaflet for your enjoyment. Once you start reading between the lines, there is a 'between' for every line...

Well Trading Standards may have gone home for the weekend, but Greenwich Police haven't, have they?
Surely a quiet word in the landlord's ear from the rozzers would put an abrupt end to this disgarceful and persistent scam.
Went past on the bus at around half three and noticed a queue of people outside. About 30 people.
I wandered if that was what was going on. Feel sorry for them especially as it looked like a mix of older people and foreign students.
Oh that's what it was. I saw the queue and thought it was a particularly civilized line for the bus. Come to think of it, that would be pretty odd outside the Dirty Willy.
I agree - how come the pub can keep doing it. Is it freehold? If it is tenanted, surely the freeholders would be interested in this.
How does the scam work anyway?
I received an almost identical leaflet through the door earlier today. As I live in Kilburn in north-west London, the venue given is the Kingdom Bar at 229 Kilburn High Road, London NW6 7JG.
The 'sale' is set to take place tomorrow on the August Bank Holiday, so I haven't been able to get through to Consumer Direct or the Trading Standards Institute. I called the local council on their emergency number but the polite chap on the line was unable to classify this as an emergency. The local police too are not interested.
