Faded Greenwich (2)
Today's Ghost Sign in the Faded Greenwich series (shamelessly ripped off from the fabulous Faded London blog which never, sadly, seems to venture South East ) is courtesy of Roger, who spotted it on the corner of Norway Street. We can only wonder how long this little reminder of Greenwich's industrial past will last, its being perilously close to the new Greenwich Reach development.I've been unable to find out anything about Dowells, though from the writing, I'd guess it was a Victorian company. I have no idea what will happen to it - or, indeed, the very sad old pub The Thames, in the same street. It's a nice old place - could easily be turned into the Greenwich equivalent of the Dog & Bell...

The Thames pub has been closed for many years now - I assume that at some stage it will be turned into luxury flats.......
When I first moved to Greenwich proper (ie down from the Blackheath Standard) it was a busy pub (at least during the daytime) opening early to serve the men working on the wharves etc. The full English was awesome, and the fish and chips was about a pound of chips with two large pieces of battered cod - ie about twice what a standard portion from the Golden Chippy would be (and they're not stingy).
It was a Whitbread house and the cask beers were always well kept.
There are Things Going On inside the Thames. I run past it daily, and there is activity going in and out, and there has been an electric saw thing set up outside, and people - well probably just one or two people - using it and taking stuff into the pub.
No idea what they are doing with said cut wood, but Something is Going On.
