Bespoke Shoes

Ann asks:

"This is not quite a Greenwich query, more a Blackheath one. But I'm hoping that you will be able to help me.

There is a 'shop' in Blackheath who make made to measure shoes. I can't remember the name or exact address. Can you help with a name, address or phone number?"

The Phantom, as seems to be usual these days, is a bit stumped. I don't actually know of a real, proper shoemaker in Blackheath - though of course that doesn't mean one doesn't exist.

The splendid (and still defiantly independent) Pares Footwear is the double-fronted store in Tranquil Vale, worth a visit (especially at sale time) not least for the very strange, brown-painted curly wooden balustrading outside the shop, but it only sells shoes, doesn't make them as far as I know. On the other hand, it prides itself on it standard of fitting and specialist footwear- so if you're looking for orthopaedic-quality fit, it might just be the ticket.

The closest bespoke shoemakers I know of is Merrifields in East Dulwich. They don't have a website that I can find, but their address is:

42, GROVE VALE, London, SE22 8DY Tel: 020 8693 1611

Folks - do you know of a shoemaker in Blackheath I've missed?

I think the shoe makers being referred to is now no more. It sounds to me like a service that was offered by a very exclusive boutique just next door to Comber's the estate agent, just to the right of where the video shop used to be - are you still with me?!

Anyway, it became a travel agent, but up until then it seemed to be a bespoke leather fashion emporium.

I never saw anyone go in our out much but the owner took great care over his window displays. He even had a Vespa in the window at one point, I suppose to underline his Italian fashionista credentials.

So, this would seem the most likely place to have provided such a service.

I wonder where the owner is now?

Very swarthy and chic he was!

ps. the front of this premises btw is one of the villages most attractive and intriguing shop fronts. Very 19302, art deco.

Latelygay.

How long ago are you talking about? I am sure this shop was there about 2-3 years ago.

I spoke to the man (he was definately English not Italian)

Not the place then as that boutique is gone at least five years passim.

Otherwise, there's what I assumed only to be a shoe repairers up near Zero Degrees bar.
