Newbie Food Recommendations

Neil asks:

"We've just moved to Greenwich - and we love it. Church bells chiming the time, the park, the river, the university, the museums. Don't tell anyone else how nice it is! (your secret is safe with me... TGP)

One thing we're struggling with though is finding a special restaurant - eg for birthdays, anniversaries etc.

We tried The Hill which had an ok atmosphere with nice staff but poor delivery of the actual food.

We've also tried a few pubs & café's but need guidance - can you recommend anything? - even if it's a short drive away - we live just around the corner from The Feathers - which is actually the best place we've found so far.

We like any kind of cuisine - although my wife especially likes sushi / oriental - like Royal China in Canary Wharf or Moshi Moshi in Waitrose in Canary Wharf. We have a three and a half year old, so family friendly recommendations are best."

The Phantom replies:

I'm answering this one here as I'm sure everyone else will have recommendations too.

Firstly, I'd say you're in pretty safe hands at the Feathers. The food is good, service friendly and the atmosphere nice and local, despite its close proximity to the park.

I also like the Vanbrugh Tavern, which went up even further in my estimation the other day when I wasn't drinking and very miserable about it. The bar lady made a huge effort to make my lime and soda into an interesting drink - with real, pulped limes, umbrellas, stirrers - you name it. Camp as Christmas and I loved it. There was so much food on my plate it was spilling over. Sadly they don't seem to have resolved the dispute with the neighbours over the pub garden yet, so most of it is immaculately cared for - and roped off.

The Yacht in Crane Street is good for pies, and although I've heard the odd 'not as good as it was' tale recently, I've not noticed any real drop in quality myself. Best for winter, as no balconies onto the Thames. I also like the pies at the Nevada St Deli but it's not really 'celebration' stuff...

For slightly upper-market fare, I recommend the marvellous Guildford, run by lovely French people with excellent, slightly pricey food and a very good garden.

I like Inside, too, which, being just outside the tourist triangle, can afford to cater just to locals - and get them to return again and again.

Depending on how authentic your wife likes her sushi, Ginza is definitely the Japanese place to go to in Greenwich. It looks unpromising from the outside and is at the 'wrong' end of Woolwich Road - but the food and the welcome are always fantastic. Japanese friends tell me it's not wildly authentic, but who cares when the food's as good as this?

Other places that deserve a nod are Kum Luang (enjoyable Thai food and a good fallback for Christmas parties as lots of room) - Mr Chung for Chinese and Ghurkas Inn for curry. For decent takeaway fish and chips, you'll do a lot worse than The Golden Chippy.

Further afield, I have a couple of recommendations. Buenos Aires Cafe in Blackheath is fabulous, but you need to book well in advance. The service can be, ahem, quirky, but the food is superb. Not really one for kiddies.

My favourite Chinese restaurant round here is actually in Woolwich, believe it or not. Favourite Inn is round the back of the station, on the dodgiest-looking street imaginable. The place doesn't look much - but the food is great and the service mother-hen like.

But for a real blow-out, second-mortgage celebration, try the Spread Eagle. A controversial choice, I know, but I have to say the decor is excellent (worth going for the art collection alone...) and the food very good indeed. It's a place where you would feel like you were celebrating something important, and that counts for a lot.

I could go on - but I'm not going to. Other people will have their two penn'orth to add in - and there's always the Eating Out section on the blog...

The Union on Royal Hill has great food, the Angus Steak Burger is a winner as my American friend said "Holy c**p, look at the size of that!" and they do change their small menu every few months, plus a garden, and a great spot out the front to watch the strange comings and goings of The Hill.

I second Inside. We had our wedding lunch there, and they made everything superb. Great food, great service, couldn't have been better.

Surely the Rivington is a good bet?

I love the food there and the service is generally pretty good! I love the tall guy from New Zealand (bit of guess work there) - he always seems disapproving of my choice!

I've had some very formal fancy dinners there with friends, but equally some calm, relaxed breakfasts and lunches.

Their wine menu is great and the staff always seem knowledgable about the food.

It's definately my favourite choice of restuarant in Greenwich, and luckily the staff aren't snotty like at Inside and you don't need the 3rd mortgage like you do at Spread Eagle (although it's well worth it once a year!).

I'd also say it's quite child friendly - when I went with a friend with a baby they were happy to provide a high chair, baby food etc etc.

Welcome to the neighbourhood!

I also really rate 'Rivington' - we've never had a bad meal or second-rate service and we've eaten there loads of times: with kids; groups; brunch - all great.

'Inside' is a real favourite too. It's understated cool and tucked away from the main tourist drag of Tex-Mex muck on the high street. 'Spread Eagle' is great for a special occasion and I'd second the recommendations for 'Ginza' and 'Gurkha'. They're the only takeaways we have and they're always excellent.

If your wife likes Royal China, I would suggest the Dim Sum at The Peninsula in North greenwich - very authentic, always packed with chinese diners!
Also Chapters in Blackheath is a really good option and a bit further afield, The Gun acros the river from the O2 is excellent (one of my favourite places to eat in London)..

It's not that special or fancy but we always had a soft spot for the Green Pea Inn next to (well kind of part of) Hardy's. Best pies in greenwich, although the owner can take a bit of getting used to.

I never got the appeal of the Vanbrugh, lovely garden and nice drinks but the couple of times we tried eating there the food was second rate and overpriced, althoguh we might have just been unlucky.

I had a really enjoyable meal at the tapas place attached to the cinema last weekend. It's a bit of a funny space to eat in, but the food, wine and service was great.

Cattleya in Charlton is great for thai, OK for tapas and has lovely service, and seems very child-friendly from the times I've been in there.

Inside is fantastic and great value during the week - 2 courses for £15, 3 for £19 - for the quality of the food at that price it can't be beat.

Rivington is also fabulous - Chris at the bar makes amazing cocktails, food is seasonal and they've given us excellent service on all occasions.

Across the river try El Faro - only a short tube ride away - superb spanish tapas and a great spanish wine selection.

Much as I wouldn't touch most of FTW place's, Coach and Horses does reasonable food and (on the main observed) non-smoking outside area in the market is great for kids.

Also, Mogul downstairs is good for a curry and an exception to the other tourist traps.

Second comments for Guildford, Buenos Aires, Rivington, Inside, El Faro. Also think The Hill is worth a second try at least for the fish and chips.

Finally, while you get the chance the brilliant Kaya House in Deptford. Sad, sad news is that Ambrose and co. are giving it up, innit, and heading back to Kuala Lumpur after many years of being the best little secret in the area.

I second (or third or fourth?) Inside and also Chapters (now revamped as a bistro) - had a really nice meal there recently, also the Rivington and Ginza.

I also have a soft spot for Efes Meze on Trafalgar Road, but haven't been for a while so not sure if it's still up to scratch.

If you are wine drinking newbies, I wholeheatedly recommend trying a tasting event at Theatre of Wine. Not sure it counts as "eating" out but you do get bread, cheese and cured meats, and they are always great fun.

The better food in Greenwich (Inside, Rivington for breakfast or lunch) seems to come with a lousy view. THe best views (Trafalgar Tavern) come with lousy food.

But if you have the nipper in tow, walk through the foot tunnel, while it's still open, to Mud Chute City farm. Great food, and you get to watch lambs and ponies (not on the menu) gambolling around. I heartily recommend their home-made ginger beer.

Inside - Greenwich South Street.

It has delivered consistently good food time and time again. Independently owned by the chef and his wife. Excellent place.

PS. They do brunch too.

Oh, yes definately try Mudchute Farm and Chapters in Blackheath! Both fantastic!

I'm not a big fan of any of the tapas place in town... I felt the food at the one by the cinema was merely microwaved and not great value, and while the food at San Miguel didn't taste too bad, it gave me food poisoning!!! Not so good!

The tapas by the cinema is a local joke. truly awful. Are they still claiming to be organic? amazing what you can get from Lidl these days.

I can't believe no one has mentioned SE10! Great food, great atmosphere. I don't know whether they're child-friendly, as I've never seen kids in there, and it's deffo the oddest location for a restaurant of its calibre, but it's where we go for special occasions, and it's never failed to provide a fantastic dining experience.

Sorry S O Chives, I forgot to re-read the original brief. I have to admit that even in these times of tightened purse strings the chip shop probably falls short of delivering several of the key ingredients required for a celebratory meal. I guess it has to involve sitting down at a table, with one or more person, without the telly on and talking- and I guess the food needs to be more of a treat than everyday grub.

I second nearly every restaurant you've mentioned, Guildford, Buenos Aires, Rivington, Inside and definitely the little Zin's for a cheap eat but totally disagree with The Spread Eagle which is disgraceful. Looks very promising but the food is very disapointing for the price- try the Rivington instead.

The chinese at the Holiday Inn is well worth a visit and is very child friendly.

otherwise if you can manage the journey, the Gun is great (at Can Wharf) or Amerigo Vespucci which is a fantastic Italian.

hungry now...

Well, yeah, sort of, but Mr Fast Fry will actually do you a deep-fried Mars Bar!!!!
They had a box of Snickers bars the last time I was in there too - battered deep-fried Snickers! That's your real celebration food and you can stick the Spread Eagle and the Rivington where the sun don't shine. (Inside too, actually)

Inside,Rivington The Vanburgh (lunch 2 courses and a drink £10) all good value.
To paraphrase someone else SE10 is a modest restaurant, and it has much to be modest about.

Sorry Franklin, but I guess you haven't been to SE10 for a while: it's been closed since at least May...

Inside, The Rivington and (location aside) Ginza. But if the Kaya House is changing hands, go there first.

PS Inside have stopped doing brunch. They're a tad severe and probably thought it frivolous.

had my worst ever meal at the Gun (was nothing to do with the food however!), if you like Thai Green Curry then Kum Luang on Creek St never disappoints, but Buenos Aires in Blackheath for me is the standout romantic spot in the area (assuming you're not veggie). Just sensational steaks, with fantastic wines, great atmosphere and staff, and a stroll over the heath home. I love it.

Laicram Thai in Blackheath (just round the corner from Barclays near the library and post office) does superb thai food. It's probably our restaurant of choice in the area.

Among some beautiful views to be enjoyed in ambience of Pub Garden, Ragged Cot from Gloucestershire is ultimate combination of cost efficiency, local favorite & stunning views. Pot kiln from West Berkshire looks over Balmy garden from redbrick pub grub. Olde Bell from Berkshire has magnificent verdant garden of natural beauty & cute outside furniture. In Britannia from London, you can chill with beer overlooking lawn, scene of Victoria Park.

The tapas place next to the cinema has changed, it used to be yuck but the last time I went, it was very good and the waiter said they had undergone a major change. The Hill is actually my fav restaurant possibly because it's across the street from me ;-) but the rosemary chips are to die for, the food and wine are always good and change often and even when I go there by myself, the service is lovely. For authentic Indian, go to Madras restaurant or the amazingly cheap and yummy but basic Suvai Aruvi in Lewisham. The nicest places to eat in Greenwich are the brunch places - Peter de Wit's cafe, Nevada Deli, Buenos Aires cafe and Royal Hill Teas - all A1!
