WiFi For Nothing And The Chips For Free
James, clearly in the spirit of the times, asks:
"I was wondering if you have come across free WiFi access anywhere in Greenwich?"
You know, James - this one is similar to the karaoke question last week. I have seen signs for free WiFi, but I'm darned if I can remember where. A nagging voice at the back of my mind says Trafalgar Road - perhaps at Sonia's Deli and Cafe, a few doors up from the William IV, but I can't swear to it.
Come to think of it I'm pretty sure that the bar in the Picturehouse has it too, but I can't find any reference to it on their website.
But here's an interesting thing I just found which might be helpful, if you can bear the odd ad and a rather slow speed, which operates between Millbank and Greenwich...

Nevada Street deli - near the main gates to the park
Biscuit - in Nelson Road
I often see people using laptops in the Greenwich Union (working from home lol!), so I'm pretty sure that there is WiFi there.
Also, there is the excellent Lord Nelson not far away, which I have just discovered on Machester Rd, 2 minutes walk from Island Gardens DLR station or the northern end of the foot tunnel. I'm not sure I should be giving this little secret away :-} but it's a nice change from the pubs in central Greenwich - a comfy, nicely refurbed pub with a good pub grub ( NOT gastro) menu, free papers, books to borrow, and WiFi.
Sorry - obviously that's Manchester Rd, E14.
The Royal Standard in Blackheath certainly used to supply free WiFi and the stickers are still up. There are some complications though... You need to ask the bar staff for the access code and it only appears to support web browsing, some other applications can't get through.
And if you can't get online at the Royal Standard, Blackheath, then my iPhone picked up free access from the OneSixTwo hotel at the top of Westcombe Hill last night. Not all that convenient, though :-)
Hardys Free House on Trafalgar Road is meant to have free wi-fi, not sure if anyone behind the bar knows the password, though.
Greenwich Picturehouse Bar definitely has free wifi. I used to live in that place when i was a student.
Blackheath Library (Standard)
McDonalds has free WiFi, not the best place for coffee but not too bad if pennies are short!
Ashburnham Arms
Vanbrugh has it also
And in the west of the borough towards Deptford there's OWN (Open Wireless Network - http://own.spc.org/drupal/node/3 )The link shows where the nodes are.
Belushi's has ....
Apart from the Royal Standard and blackheath library does anyone know in blackheath other free wifi locations?
