A Lusty Sight

Mike very kindly sent me this moody shot of HMS Illustrious AKA 'Lusty,' who's currently moored at Greenwich. I understand that her crew were taking part in the Lord Mayor's Show and Remembrance Sunday (today is, after all, 'proper' Remembrance Day) at the weekend.
I couldn't resist popping down to see her myself by daylight just now. She's just enormous - but then I suppose she is invincible...

Last week they had an impressive fireworks display on deck, to the sound of the 1812 Overture.

Apparently she'll be leaving tomorrow if anyone wants to catch a glimpse of her on the move.

Simon - that's an amazing pic. Wish I'd seen the display...

Aha, so thats where those fireworks came from, I thought they were a bit grand for our local Primary school. They were even better than the Lord Mayors display.
Hussar! for those "Lusty" sailors and their exploding rockets!!!!

I'd love to get down to the barrier and watch her go through.......
I assume she follow the tide out after 12.30 ish, but not being a salty seadog I wouldn't know for certain. Any ideas folks?

I would imagine that your right Dazza and she would leave on the high tide. I wonder if all the sailors have to breath in as she goes through the barrier? It must be an awfully tight fight between those shiny barrier thingamys.

There's a video of her squeezing through the barrier on the BBC news site.

Thanks for that Simon, I winced as she slid in. (Ooooer Missus.....) And as for the 3 point turn........now that would be a sight!!! It's almost a pity she's facing the right way now.

There's been a helicopter hovering over her for a while now and two tugs are on their way down the river - it looks like she'll be off soon.

Fabbo, Simon. I confess the firework one is still my fave.

Did you get to see her go through the barrier, Dazza?

Afraid not.......something called work interfered with my plans......Drat!!!!!
Great pics though Simon, I'm really jealous.
It's the one thing that bugs me about Greenwich, you only ever get to hear about the little things, (OK Big things!!) happening after the event. I wish there was something like Cutty Sark Cam (http://cuttysarkcam.org.uk/) for the river so those of us who don't live on the banks get to see how vibrant and busy our River really is........
Now if only we could get the council to allow us to use the CCTV cams for an hour a day.......that would be interesting. Or even a webcam on the Camera Obscura at the Observatory......

Doesn't look too tight a squeeze to me. Not as bad as the width-restrictors on the roads around Blackheath!

Saw Boris trying to do a Napoleon impression on board a Navy launch on his way out to visit the ship last week.

Dazza, check this link for events listings.

http://www.greenwichwhs.org.uk/events/index.asp

It's the World Heritage Site website and their listings cover everything that happens in Grteenwich and the borough - big and teeny...

Thanks Anonymous. I also know that the Phantom's Parish News section is a great place to keep up with Local events for Local people.....
But things like 'Lusty' arriving and departing never seem to get mentioned. I often check the Port Of London website to see if anything is due but I suppose for Security reasons they don't like advertising.
