Car Mechanics Again

We've been here before, but sometime's it's worth revisiting. Alison has moved down from the North West where she's been used to paying between £80 - £100 to have her car serviced and is a bit shocked at the quote she's just had for £240. She's wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere that's good and not too pricey.

I've just had my car serviced and it cost me £236.30, which I'm afraid, Alison, I think is pretty much par for the course down here. Of course, it's possible that I'm being ripped off, but the very fact that you've been quoted nearly the same amount as I've just paid makes me think it's about right.

My mechanic is an old family friend and sadly isn't taking any new customers on (not, I suspect, that you;d be particularly interested at that price...) - can anyone suggest any good people for Alison?

In the meanwhile, I thought you might like a sneaky peek at the Phat Phantom-Mobile, parked in its special residents parking bay outside the Phantom Apartment...*

*Not really...

Kwik-Fit (GB) Limited - 443
42 Blackheath Road
London

Should be a lot cheaper.

I use Delacourt Motors (Delacourt Road off Old Dover Road). I can't remember how much the last service was but less than £240 for sure. They are probably not the cheapest but he's trustworthy and reliable. Well recommended.

Actually - now I come to think of it, that price included the MOT and a couple of minor adjustments when the car failed...

So yes - it should be a bit less than that.

I'll decond Tony's comment - totally reliable & very busy (good sign) but don't take credit cards (I think) so you need to have the cash up front...

I really rate:-
Park Row Garage Ltd
The Garage, Hoskins Street, London, SE10 9PB
020 8858 6251

I used them for about 15 years before I bought my present car which does not currently require an MOT and has a main dealer service arrangement.
The proprietor is called Rob, I think.

Can we also note the sad demise of Westcombe Motor Spares - although they closed some time ago - following the accident to Betty's foot - the shop was a great place for an in-depth conversation about windscreen wipers. Anthony kept on doing cars until very recently and had a little Aladdin's cave round the back. Reliable, cheap, nice guy - the only problem was finding him.

I'd like to second the vote for Park Row Garage (and, yes, the owner is called Rob). I'm not sure what their price would be for a service, but they've always struck me as very honest in how they conduct business.

Yup - I vote for Park Row Garage as well. They're always very straightforward for a service.
As far as MOTs as concerned, it's worth getting them done at the council bus garage (yes, we ordinary folks can go there too) because they're cheap, and there's no self-interest, so they'll simply tell you what's wrong with the car and not what 'needs attention' (garage speak for 'let us do the work so you can pay us a fortune you don't need to spend'. Our local one is at Fleet Management, Birchmere Depot, Birchmere Business Site, Eastern Way, Thamesmead, Greenwich, London, SE28 8BF. Their number is 020 8921 4561

I'd recommend Direct Garage Services on Bowater Place, off Old Dover Rd. I've always found them quite reasonably priced and efficient.

I've been a customer of Morgan Richards (formerly Woolwich Motor Co.)for more than 20 years. (020 8854 2550) They've just moved from Woolwich to a unit on the Brocklebank Industrial Estate (next to Lidl's/adjacent to Matalan) down on the Peninsula. I had an MOT and full service done yesterday for £200, so that price seems to be the going rate. I would wholeheartedly recommend them. Being a typical woman, and not wanting to know too much about a car, except that it's going to start when I turn the key in the ignition, I have never felt patronised and have always been treated well. Hope that's helpful.

JK Auto Services in Charlton on 020 8293 1511 - got my car serviced for £110 about a year ago. Trustworthy bloke who has been a family friend's mechanic for 20-odd years.

I just used the Park Row Garage based on the recommendations from this thread. I have to say i am a little dissappointed, they charged me £45 just to do a scan and tell me what the problem was, they didn't tell me about this charge before - Kwick Fit on Blackheath road did the scan for free!! I won't be using Park Row Garage again!...
