When Benedict sent me this pic, I thought he'd sent me one of his holiday snaps by accident - it looks like Rome or Florence or somewhere else equally exotic. It's actually the top of St Alfeges, taken this weekend at sunset and it sort of sums up the time of year we're at. Fabulous weather - the like of which we could only dream in the summer months, but the birds know better. If you look closely, the starlings are gathering. Yes - autumn is drawing in. The mornings are misty-moisty, but the afternoons are glorious. I love this time of year.
Which makes it all the more galling that your Phantom was away this weekend and missed what must have been one of the busiest bunch of fun events we've had so far this year. The Cultural Olympiad began, The London Bubble were performing, Bearspace were doing sundry exhibitions, concerts were going on all over the shop - hell - I could even have seen Charlton play for a fiver, I discover from Friday's GreenwichCard missive, which I've only just seen this morning.
Admittedly I had fun getting away this weekend, but I can't help feeling that I really missed out on good stuff back in Greenwich.
So, for a change, I'm not going to write about things I've done, but ask you what YOU did. Did you go to any of the events? Were they any good? Do you have any pics I can see?
I'd love to hear about what I missed. I like to torture myself...

We didnt go to any paticular event this weekend although lunch on Saturday was quite eventful, but we had guests over and had a good romp all over Greenwich and they were amazed at the amount of stuff to do! We left them as they went off for the Observatory "backstage" tour. They also made an interesting observation in that we have a lot of large old buildings here and rather than being the cold and foreboding type, they are warm and inviting. Which may have something to do with the Autumn sun , the fact they are open to the Public, and the lovely sounds of Jazz and classical music you hear as you walk through the ORNC!(maybe the wine at lunch?)
Yep, I agree Phantom, a beutiful time of year!
Did anyone get to see all the candles lit in the park on Friday night?
Yes, the weather just made you want to go out. I went to Blackheath Farmers Market for the first time - bought some glorious tomatoes, black olive bread, goats cheese & three HUGE sunflowers (to get me over the not-so-good weather later this week).
2012 Olympics in Greenwich Park.
FACT FROM LOCOG - there will be an arena to seat 23,000 spectators (Charlton Athletic = 27,000) PLUS a 6.5km cross country course, sophisticated stabling for 250 very valuable horses which will need to be secure from doping while they acclimatise pre-event - that's 2011 test event, 2012Olympics and Paralympics. Hundreds of temporary buildings, broadcast compounds, farriers, restaurants, security fencing, floodlighting, sewage, drainage and more.I cannot understand why anyone who cares about our park or environment would support such a hammering when it could be so much better and so more welcome and better staged elsewhere. They can only ruin this park once- and it will be hell while we live through it.
Road Closures for the Half Marathon 5 October - did anyone get more than a week's notice of road closures next Sunday? We are geared up for the annual London Marathon but to close roads at a week's notice, effectively sealing Westcombe Park area off for 6 hours on Sunday is so cavalier - and they (organisers and our Council) know they are in the wrong as I have managed to negotiate some concessions to allow people in wheelchairs to my Sunday lunch party.........so anyone think that the Olympics won't affect us?? This is just for a one day half marathon.....Be worried - be very worried........
I've got some pics from Friday night online here: http://is.gd/2zSf/
Will try to upload some more later, but have a big backlog of other stuff to plough through.
After a sad Saturday on the banks of the royal blue Mersey watching my beloved Everton being beaten by the neighbouring yard dogs, I made my way back down here to act on a Phantom tip.
I hadn't seen the new incarnation of the Mish Mash band- infact, I'd not seen them at all this decade and some great memories are best left that way. So it was with some trepidation that I made my way to The Star and Garter to catch their second (or possible third) set of the afternoon.
I wasn't disappointed. Their set mixed real old-time favorites with a clutch of new wave and 80's numbers. I could have done with a bit more soul but that’s just me and I don't know what I would want them to leave out to make way for it.
They are great musicians, one and all- with the women vocalists bringing something extra. I hung my tears out to dry and they were blown away by Mike Paice's sax playing- I'm sure he is actually even better than I recall. Tich Turner is also an excellent front man. The addition of a final 'Don't You Want Me Baby' was a fine touch- though not one that Tich and former vocal sparring partner from those ancient times, Marilyn Gentle, could ever have covered without it ending in blood on the dance floor. I'll be watching out for future gigs.
