Methers has just spotted the dodgy-looking bar under the Plaza looks just about to open. But will it feature the much talked-about pole dancing? It's unclear as yet.
But I have a theory. The council's so Olympics-crazy just now, I'm beginning to wonder whether they misheard when they were asked for the licence - and thought the club wanted to put on pole-vaulting. Now that would be a novel idea, though perhaps unwise in a basement...
I did note that the ex-Chinese restaurant upstairs from it is now up for sale as an 'investment opportunity' for a luxury apartment. "Plenty of wardrobe space for dirty macs..."
By the by - did anyone actually see the amusement arcade's sign before it lost half its letters - or did it always advertise AMU ENTS? I don't recall it ever having the requisite number of letters.
Methers also noted the new shop that's opened where the rudest cobbler in London Town closed a couple of months ago. I can't really tell what it sells - whether it's antiques/curios or gifts or even upmarket junk - I haven't been in yet, but the selection of phones in the window is a bit of an eye-popper, and it lends a spot of brightness to an otherwise drab row.

That shoe mender may have been the rudest man on earth, but I do now face a small problem. Where in Greenwich can you buy bootlaces these days (the sort you put in your shoes, not the sort Mr Humbug sells, natch...)
One thing's for certain. Trafalgar Road isn't sitting still. Shops are opening, even if not all of them are quite what some people would choose. La Salumeria's opening a cafe in the back; the Trafalgar Cafe is now reopened after making itself smaller (to shoehorn a flat upstairs - probably worth more than the entire business.) Maybe things are looking up?

There is a very good shoe repairer in Charlton village, not cheap but very helpful.
I notice a new fruit and veg stall has opened up in the street next to the co-op. That's a good thing. I used to like the stall that was there until its owners retired a couple of years ago. Presumably, this new place has taken over whatever licence they had.
The rudest man on Earth chose Greenwich, over the rest of the planet, to live? I dunno about you but I'm rather honored to be living in his midst. Good work, sir. Jolly good show!
Clearly, there's a huge demand for brightly coloured telephones in East Greenwich.
Not sure about the veg stand - the '£1 a bowl of fruit' reminds me of Berwick Street in Soho where there are lost of pole-dancing places nearby (I'm told)...ah...I'm beginning to see...
Perhaps a thread on nicest/rudest shop people. I'd vote for nicest - 'African' Joe in the food shop a few doors up from the load-of-old-cobblers, rudest, people seem nice generally down this way...but the people in the internet cafe on trafalgar road are a bit grumpy I've noticed (how dare you ask to use the photocopier...)
Good Lord, only on Trafalgar Road would someone open a shop with no name that looks like your dusty old Aunt Ethel's front room. You've got to love East Greenwich.
Do we know if it's actually even a shop or just a proud display of knick knacks collected from car boot sales over the years?
I've seen a few confused potential customers loiter by the window but they almost look embarressed, as if some angry woman in curlers and a towelling dressing gown is going to come and draw the curtains and mouth obscenities at them.
Meanwhile, we wait with baited breath and cafe deprived excitement for the grand opening of the seating area in the deli...
eastside mutha, I too can't wait - I hope they play a constant loop of 1970s progressive rock band 'Premiata Forneria Marconi' to tap along to while sipping the espresso. ("Dove... quando... parte 2" would fit the bill.)
I think they're waiting for the furniture to turn up.
Well I must say those multicoloured phones sent a spooky shiver down my spine, I have seen them before.....

Strange?
It does seem to be the most obvious omission - a decent cobbler in Greenwich. We go to the father and son operation opposite New Cross train station - nothing like an artisan family tradition to bring out me in Dickens.
Showing my age but who remembers when this used to be the Post Office.
There was another shoe repair shop in Trafalgar Rd, well just off of it, behind what is now the Mencap Shop. He was fondly known as "Horrible Horrie" who, if still around, would win hands down if not the "Rudest" then certainly the "Weirdest" shoe repairer.
Talking of shops, Mencap used to be "Frisby Menswear" where all the discerning young men in Greenwich could buy the latest shoes, tab collar shirts and hipster trousers......"Groovy Man"
I spoke too soon about that fruit and veg stall. It's rubbish.
Bring back Chris and Dave - even if they are enjoying their retirement!
Arguably the rudest man I have met in a long time, even some of my of my colleagues commented on his attitude when they have visited him.
So rude infact that I did not leave him my trade even though I have no idea where there is another cobbler in Greenwich or Blackheath are. If any one knows of any I would be very grateful for the information.
