Back to School

There's a definite Autumnal feel to the air. Of course we haven't had the greatest summer ever, but even so, as from yesterday when I couldn't even see Canary Wharf, there's something different going on. Something wet, something crisp, something yellow. The sun's out, but it's a different sun. It's a back-to-school sun. Sharp, harsh, fresh.

I always have a rush of optimism at this time of year. It's probably that new-term, new-Phantom thing, but all the same it's as pungent to me as New Year.

I'm back, folks. And with a rush of excitement for what's to come...

I'm told there's a new bakery opened - something I've been hoping for for a long time - I'm be getting down there as soon as possible to check it out. I've also heard on the grapevine that the guys at La Salumeria in Trafalgar Road, after having the business up for sale for what must be about a year now have decided to give it another go, add a cafe at the back and keep the place open. I have a feeling their coffee will be worth a visit.

Greenwich Theatre have a programme that actually makes me want to go this season (as opposed to the last one which I found highly uninspiring) and the Picturehouse continues to come up with fab things and new ideas. There are events at the Old Royal Naval College, and new exhibitions to enjoy.

Ok - so there are a few things about which we need to at least be thinking - the developments at the market, for example, which are slinking through planning almost without notice, and the Olympics Equestrian Events concerns rumble on - but they are for Tomorrow.

Today - today, I'm full of the joys of Autumn. All can be enjoyed. All can be talked about. All can be achieved...

Hmm. Encouraging. I think that's what I want - someone to actually look at this and see if it really will work, rather than their just assuring us it will without coming up with any actual plans.

I'm surprised they've only got KPMG - a firm of accountants - to do the review though. Is it really ALL about the cash?

Still - it's a start. If I can be persuaded that NO damage will occur, I'll take it on board.

PLans for the market are already sufficiently advanced for archeologists to have been picked to dig up the site, pre-construction. Apparently they're very excited, there are possibilities they will find some important royal or aristo bodies.

As for the developments, look like they'll be just in time for a consumer downturn... terrific, isn't it, what Warwick Leadley get turfed out for not paying a huge hike in rent, while the space they've vacated stays unlet? Personally, I hope the downturn does for the Bardsley Lane development.

Not all is doom and gloom though: we can heartily recommend Rhodes, good baguettes at a reasonable price, and their apricot Danishes are just the thing for a Sunday-morning hangover. That corner has always spelt retail death, but there's a real panache about the operation which suggests they will prosper.

Surely the biggest news of the last few weeks is the passing of the lamentable "W Lounge" and it's impending re-birth as the "Lanu Tiki Lounge"?

I trust the Phantom will don a hula-skirt and be first in the queue to review what promises to be a new concept in tropico-urban alcoholic hedonism...?

You're kidding? I LOVE tikki hula-kitsch. South London Pacific rocks!

I confess I never saw a living soul in the "W Lounge."

I suppose I don't dare ask - I assume it IS another Inc attempt..?

Naturally - FTW wouldn't let that place go without a fight.

I was chatting to a former employee of his the other day who told me that (allegedly)he openly doesn't care whether his places make money; for him it is purely an acquisitive empire building exercise and a way of using up a little spare cash from an old family oil fortune.

I walk past the Bark and Grill most evenings on my way back from a popular and busy independent pub on Royal Hill (ahem) and it is uniformly empty; bored looking staff leaning on the bar, music playing to a non-existant audience...sigh...

Ah , those "Back to skool" signs used to fill me with dread as a kid. No more night fishing with my mates, no more building Kon -Tiki rafts out of lollipop sicks and coke cans, no more 8 hour games of footy, playing untill it got so dark no one could see the ball.....
I guess at least we have a few good games of conkers to look forward to!

The Salumeria face lift is great - amazing what a little white paint and removing the bread from the window can do...

Glad to hear there will be a cafe at the back - I was wondering what was going on behind the white drape :)

Whoa - I didn't realise La Salumeria was up for sale; I'm glad to hear they're sticking around though. I'll obviously have to revisit my promise to myself to drop by every Saturday for some Mushroom Stock Cubes, Pocket Coffee and Chinotto, and now add a cup of coffee to that as well...

Just visited La Salumeria yesterday and am very impressed with the facelift. Doesn't feel like a dirty little secret anymore. Shame, because it was MY secret, but it's got to be better for business.

Two more things in the neighbourhood - there's a new veg seller on the street next to the coop. Wonderfully creative spellings, "rasbarys" add to the charm. Also, why is there so much scaffolding on the roof of the Co-op? They go up at least three storeys higher than necessary. Any explanations?

I've been wondering that myself. In fact a couple of people have been asking me and I've been meaning to ask in the Co-Op but keep forgetting...

apparently they are only supposed to be adding one storey so all that scaffolding is anyone's guess

Perhaps it has an elaborate roof? Pagoda-style, maybe? Or with minaret?

Anyone know what it's for?
