Greenwich Wheel Around The Clock
So. A few weeks (and many rides) into the visit of the Greenwich Wheel, what do we think of it? Is it, as Time Out suggests, a bit of an also-ran - that when you get to the top you can afford a glimpse of The Real Thing - or does it stand up in its own right?
I've been collecting together a series of photos of the wheel at different times of the day (see Rod's enviable view first thing in the morning, above) and I thought I'd take the opportunity to chew the fat over our own local ferris wheel.
I confess I really enjoyed the experience myself. I went during the daytime, and I'm keen to take another ride when the sun's gone down, to get a different view. It's not as dramatic as The London Eye, but instead gives a more intimate - personal, even - image of the streets and places that we know so well. That said, I suspect it is mainly interesting for those of us who actually live here.
I don't know about you but whenever I walk past it, it seems to be almost empty. This surprises me - I was expecting queues - but maybe it's the victim of bad timing - the perceived credit crunch seems to be making everyone jumpy. Maybe the price is an off-putter - for a family it gets quite pricey, and I'm really not convinced about the value for money of the VIP pods, even if they do have glass bottoms (thanks Bryn, for proving that for me)
One thing that I really do think confounded some people's expectations is the way it looks. It was originally refused permission because it would spoil the view. I'm sorry - but I think it looks fantastic - both close-up and from the park as part of the panorama - here's one I took a week or so ago, mid-afternoon:
I particularly like it as the twilight sets in - as the sun sets...
...and the lights switch on...
Dave, however, felt it was somewhat of an anti-climax.
"I'd booked a Gondola for six (cheaper that way) but I fear this was my downfall as once everybody was settled and we were on the move it didn't give you much space to maneuver. The non Greenwich residents in the party were quite impressed with the views but those of us who are used to standing in the shadow of the Phantom (tee hee - TGP) and gazing out across London weren't that taken. On the plus side the gondolas do have air-con so it was nice, albeit short, rest from the heat.
If you must give the Wheel a spin (ha, ha) I think it best that just a couple share the Gondola (Blow the expense!) as this enables you to easily swap places to get a different viewpoint. But really, a walk up to the Phantoms Rest (double tee-hee - TGP) or Point Hill will give a much better vista - it's free and will also keep you fit.
Personally I think the Wheel is a must - it's a one-off - and a Great Greenwich Thing To Do. You may kick yourself later if you don't.

I think it's fantastic. 6 of us squeezed into one pod, and it was fine...and much better value than the Eye. And the view from the wheel is completely different from the one at the top of the hill in the park, which makes it worthwhile. (The ORNC looks incredible...)
I think the travel problems (DLR down to one track, Jubilee line suspended both week-ends) have massively affected visitor numbers to the area. A bad time for the wheel to be up, really.
I haven't been on it, but generally would prefer it wasn't there. We have the London Eye - why have a copycat? Along with the zeppelin rides popping across my skyline throughout the day, I'm beginning to feel as if Londoners are being treated like small children who constantly need to be entertained.
If you dont want to pay you can always write a letter to Greenwich Time for a chance to win free tickets.
I did and got two tickets even though my letter questioned council policy :-)
Well , myself and Mrs Benedict went on her birthday a few weeks back and the staff were very obliging and we went round FIVE times, which was just enough after a bottle of Prosecco, I think the bubbles expanded with the altitude (a la the foot tunnel). We managed to speak to the manager after to thank her and congratulate them on having a great asset for Greenwich. On suggesting that they link up with the boat tours and coach parties also the hoards at the Observatory she seemed to dismiss it and said everything will pick up once the school holidays begin...there are still empty pods galore. They need to look at their marketing, no adverts locally, nothing on the DLR , nothing on tube or trains, nothing on the boats (the boat ticket office at Embankment didnt know it even existed?)
Sill I love it, and will go again for a sunset ride.
different topic altogether - there's a thai food festival at the bandstand next weekend: http://www.amthai.co.uk/festival/
I'm delighted, i love thai food!
:)
We went for a spin around mid day a couple of Sundays ago; queueded for about 10 minutes, paid the standard entry for 2 adults but we were given a gondola to ourselves. and I didn't see any others with more than 4 to a pod. Six adults would definately be an uncomfortable squeze.
We took a couple of visitors from Norway and it was absolutely fantastic. We went at sunset and could see right across the river and through the park, over the historic buildings of Greenwich - but we were about the only people on it. The staff told us it's only busy at weekends. What a real shame. Plus our Norwegian friends were gobsmacked that it's only open until 28 Sept and that Council (who are closing down the market etc etc in historic Greenwich to make way for their boutique hotel rubbish - is there a petition against that, or a picket?!) didn't like the Eye. We all think it should be open all year around. Imagine going up there on a snowy day in winter and seeing the whole park. Wonderful wheel. Are you listening Council planner dimwits?? This is a great asset for Greenwich!

I may have come over anti-wheel but I'm not. I think as Greenwich residents we are spoilt by the view we have from the park, but the wheel does give you a good view over the immediate area and towards Deptford. I agree with Kate that it would be a fantastic way to see a winters view of Greenwich Park but unfortunately I don't think this will happen.
The friends who joined me on the Wheel mainly live in the Chislehurst/Orpington area and they knew nothing of it. As Benedict said it's a pity there was no link-up with the various tours as I think with a little more promotion it may have done a lot better. I wonder if this was down to the Council not wanting it in the first place or just bad management by the operators?
Kate - I dont who told you the council is closing down the market but I suggest you put them straight.
Its not the council we need to direct our ire at - its the owners of the market which are not the council and are seeking to destroy the market in its current form.
I think Greenwich hospital will be thawrted in their attempts to charge sky high rents to god awful tourist fast food places by the credit crunch. Even so surely the planning department at the council would thwart any attempts to radically alter the market site, errrr hang on.
As for the wheel I enjoyed it, nice view of the park and Greenwich itself, plus a good view up to Docklands. Its not as dramatic as the Eye but nore sure it claims to be. To be fair to the planners maybe just granting a temporary permit allows everyone to see in parctice if the wheel destroyed the views etc knowing that unlike a permanent structure it could be removed at a later date.
Not been yet, but I will. As soon as the weather improves! I'm really looking forward to it.
I went, thought it was okay, but crap value for £7.
It looks very pretty though, I agree.
I took the family along today the views were great and the staff were all child friendly and nice and I also think its a wonderful asset to Greenwich.
I went along at the weekend to make some enquires about prices and although it was wet and rainy,I found the staff were all really nice and friendly.
I spoke to the manager who was very helpful and on finding out we were Greenwich residents, advised us of the 10% offer everyday and buy 1 get 1 free on Mondays for Greenwich card holders, so we are going along next Monday.
Such a shame the wheel cannot stay it looked so lovely all lit up on an otherwise dreary evening.
I think it is such an nice addition to Greenwich.
