Tapas Time
Is there a decent tapas restaurant in Greenwich?
I still need to do some work here, as although I've tried San Miguel (and I love the extremely kitsch decor) it was on my own, sad Phantom that I am. Tapas is not to be consumed alone so I had the paella. I wasn't wildly impressed but I was told that the regular chef was away. I keep meaning to get a posse together to try it properly.
One place I frankly don't have much time for is the Organic Tapas Bar at the Picturehouse. I've eaten there a few times and they've either been very slow indeed, missed out dishes or brought completely different ones (or a mixture of the above.) I also worry about the amount of cream slathered over everything. I find myself wondering what's underneath that they have to coat it all so thickly.
One place you might like to try, albeit in next-door Charlton is Cattlelya in Charlton Church Street. It's a tiny little place and although I'm not convinced that their idea of registering Thai-Med food as a trademark wasn't just a tad OTT (it's less a fusion between two cuisines than two different sections of a menu - half Thai, half classic tapas) it's all very tasty, served pleasantly and ridiculously cheap. Go there on alternate Sundays for acoustic blues music. The trick is working out which alternate Sunday. Check here.

There is a great Spanish restaurant serving also excellent tapas across the river in Isle of Dog. The name of the place is El Faro and it is just next to Crossharbour DLR station, with a views to the basin from their terrace and the tapas is very authentic. They have a good website as well, where you can peek their menu and wine list.
I never go to the organic Tapas bar as i refuse to go to places that put up signs in their windows with so many spelling and grammer mistakes!
Even with my cast iron constitution I was quite ill after the last trip to San Miguel, so I'm afraid I'm not very helpful when it comes to tapas... I have no where to recommend... Although I believe Blackheath has some good places?
There used to be a good one in Blackheath - Mar i Terra - but I think it shut down a while ago.
I'd get on the train to London Bridge and go to Brindisa on the corner of Borough Market - one of the best (if not the best) in London
I think you'll find the Tapas in Charlton is in Charlton Church Lane.
oagpwsae
I'll second Brindisa - lovely grub. I was at San Miguel twice. We got a friendly welcome both times, and I can recommend the cocktails, but the food was mediocre.
Lulu I think you'll find that the correct spelling is grammar....
Time to eat Tapas pie ;-)
I have to say I love San Miguel. Its atmosphere is hard to beat, and after a few glasses of spanish red, you care a little bit less about the standard of the food. It's also pretty good value too. I just love the way the lights change from green...to white...to yellow...to pink...then back to green. All. Night.
Can I pose another question ,is something still organic after its been microwaved? Having had a peek in the kitchen at the organic tapas blah it only has racks of nuking machines....and our potato croquettes were as hard as f...ing bullets (which we refused to pay for) It kind of worries me that every dish is prepared off premises and is impossible to check whether they really do use organic produce.
San Miguel....sadly,and I have tried a few times, is nothing to write home about...
Dos Tias on the Greenwich side of Deptford Bridge does decent Tapas. The menu is small but the everything I've tried there has been tasty.
More a place for a quick lunch than an evening out.

No
Definitely El Faro - fantastic place - good wine selection as well.
There is a Tapas place at the top of Blackheath Village, next to the heath, but I haven't tried it yet... I agree about the place next to the Picturehouse - definitely disappointing.
I have been to Organic Tapas twice now and have found the service and food fab.
Personally I've always enjoyed the tapas at San Miguel, as have my friends. Plus the staff have usually been very friendly, and dealt with everything very well (especially considering that it's usually been extremely busy)
