The Golden Chippy
There is a corner of Greenwich which is forever Golden. The Golden Cafe, The Golden Vineyard and the Golden Chippy form a little row of er, maroon shops in Greenwich High Road, opposite yet another building site which is squeezed in next to the waterworks and that new restaurant.
In fact I had intended to review Bar 57 - and I will, I promise, very soon. But sometimes a Phantom just has one of those fish-and-chip moments. This was one of them.
It really was the magnificent floral display that did it. A whole bunch of sundry pots and tubs filled up with bedding plants and arranged artistically on the ground next to a distinctly wobbly aluminium table and chairs. Can't have cost them more than a few quid - but that wasn't the point. I was particularly taken with the glowy-bollard with the Petunia hat. Sorry. Fish and Chips won out over fancy new paintwork and a pool-table sign.
I like The Golden Chippy. They're friendly - slightly on the wacky side, but really - in a good way - and they have all the things you remember about childhood fish suppers. The collection of greasy newspapers to read while you're waiting, the giant sauce bottles, the 'classic' selection of fish which they cook to order.
On this particular occasion, to celebrate the petunias, I wanted to sit outside and enjoy everything that Greenwich High Road in summer can provide. We sat back with our copy of The Express and read all about the terrible things that are going on in the world, most of which seemed to have something to do with Fergie.
"Let me know if you want more chips," said the guy as he brought out the most enormous plates of cod and chips I'd ever seen. A kind, but probably futile gesture - there was no way I was going to get through that lot, let alone need more. I'd only ordered the 'standard' fish option - heaven only knows what the supersize version would have been.
You know, folks, I do like all these fancy beer-batter dishes you get in places like The Trafalgar and the Yacht. Really I do - I had an excellent one in The Hill just a few days ago. But sometimes, just a plain, straightforward honest-to-goodness crispy batter to no special recipe is just the ticket - and that's what you get here. Dark golden fish, ever so slightly greasy, moist insides and good, honest-cut chips.
Actually, I did finish my chips. I was brought up to clear my plate and Phantom Mum was watching over my shoulder. I sat there at a wobbly table in the middle of Greenwich High Road, surrounded by petunias, scoffing chips smothered in red sauce. What better way to spend an evening?
So. The moral of the story. If you want a Phantom Visit, install some cheap bedding plants outside your place. I am just a moth to a flame...
(Sadly I didn't have my camera, so I don't have any pics of the plants. You'll just have to go yourself.)

I'm on a diet, trying to be good and the Golden Chippy is just a hop, skip and a jump from my house. It's going to be hard to resist now you've put the suggestion of fish and chips in my head :(
I agree, they are very friendly there, but for best results phone ahead.
Yum! I've not had fish n' chips for ages. Must check it out.
Thanks for the recommendation. Since the closure of "Family Fish and Chips" on Bramshot Ave (SE7 so just off the Greenwich haunt)I've been looking for somewhere that could match their quality if not their slightly eccentric service. Sadly most places I have tried have served either soggy batter, soggy chips or in one case, both.
My current favourite is on Charlton Church Lane almost next door to Chu and Cho, but I'll now give the Golden Chippy a chance to shine through.
I was passing the Golden Chippy only a few days ago, and wondered aloud whether the Phantom had already done a review. Lo and behold, here it is! And to think, I may have been passing the Phantom at the very moment she was clearing her chips. So close.
I was the cloaked character with snout in chips...
SHE was clearing her chips ??
SHE ??? Are we to beleive the phantom is of the fairer sex ?????
I am of every sex and no sex. The cloak hides all...
I love the golden chippy, although I must confess i've only had the chips, but lots of them! it's on my way home after getting off the train and it's very hard to resist! yummy
Nice to get a recommendation for a good chippy. There were a couple near me in Trafalgar Road but they've both closed, one is now ZEN the other still empty! Years ago and I mean years, you were falling over them in Greenwich but times have changed.
Can't somehow see the new Greenwich residents who inhabit the posh apartments springing up all over the place popping out for "Cod, chips and a pickled onion".

Not sure what the inhabitants of the new Galliard buildings opposite the Golden Chippy will be like, but for this denizen of the Deals Gateway development, the Golden Chippy is an absolute godsend.
Bar 57 pretty decent as well. Not too busy, great pricing and very friendly owners.
The Golden Chippy is good and very friendly- but so is Mr Fast Fry- next to Glenister Gardens. They are more than happy to cook a nice piece of plaice as a special order.
Great to have several good chippies locally as the credit crunch may have put an end to my modest aspiration to perhaps one day think about a meal at The Hill (only joking- sort of).
They also do a good curry sauce which is a must with chips for me!
Do they do gravy?
I can also vouch for Mr Fast Fry - a cracking chippy that gets my chip vote on a regular basis.
I used to go to the one that is now the Bombay Bicycle Club (which is terrible, btw) and was always staggered how many people went to KFC next door by comparison to the chippy.
Talking of long-gone chippies, who remembers Hardinges, approximately where the Lloyds TSB branch on Creek Rd is now? Best cod roe and chips in London!
Grumpy old bugger, but sure could cook proper fish and chips, and would always serve local regulars before tourists! This also used to be the case in the Richard I on Royal Hill - I've had pints to me literally over the heads of tourists! Ah the good old days...
On your recommendation we had fish and chips there on Friday and as they fried our fish for us and we had to wait we were offered a glass of wine on the house! The fish was very fresh and moist and the chips were good too. Thanks phantom.

By far the best chippie around. They grill fish too if you ask
