No Wheels On My Waggon...
An anonymous journalist tip-off (oooh-er!) has just informed me that this Saturday's grand opening of the Greenwich Observation Wheel has had to be postponed.
From what I can gather, it's got itself stuck in The Hague, so hasn't actually arrived yet.
As regular readers will know, I've been hopping from foot to foot waiting for this particular circus to come to town, and here in the Phantom Household, we're all mega-disappointed.
Poor old Greenwich Foundation. Hope they're insured. I feel sorry for them - it makes them look flaky when I can only assume that it's those dastardly Dutch. They just can't bear to part with it.
My contact doesn't know when we'll finally wrest it from Netherlandish hands, but in the meanwhile, don't go down there on Saturday hoping for a ride into the skies...

According to http://www.oldroyalnavalcollege.org/events/greenwich-observation-wheel-a-new-attraction-for-summer-2008,191,EV.html
"Greenwich Wheel Launch postponed.
Due to logistical difficulties there has been a delay in delivery of the Wheel from The Hague. The scheduled Wheel launch for Friday 20th will not go ahead and a new date for start of operation and press launch will be announced as soon as possible."
rats! tarnation!
No Champagne gondola for me this Saturday.
Any fab events happening Phantom?
Gang show at Trident Hall perchance?
According to the Wheel Website....
https://www.pwrtickets.com/gw/index.aspx
Due to circumstances beyond our control the opening of the wheel has been delayed and is now scheduled to open on Wednesday 25th June 2008.
All tickets bought for the event prior to 25th June will be valid for any operational date up to 28th September 2008.
Good Job I booked ours for the 25th......LOL I hope it's not delayed any longer......
Ya boo sucks to the Hague. We've booked 28th June; fingers crossed we've wrestled the wheel from the Dutch ;-)
I was at the site today and there seems to be no sign of any action. Talking to a lorry driver who was kicking his heels there he said they were waiting on what he called "Big Wigs" to give the go-ahead and the good old "Health and Safety" was also mentioned.
Well, it had to happen. The Wheel website is now saying that the Opening will be the 26th June.
So, I'm now going to have to cancel the Trip for my family and see if I can get some money back.....
Why can't an organisation as large as the ORNC get things right? We've known about the impending arrival for months so why the surprise at 'Unforeseen circumstances'? I feel that this reflects very badly on Greenwich as a whole and I'm sure there are many Tourists leaving our Town with the opinion that there isn't much to warrant a second visit. Surely we need to boost the return traffic rather than discourage it??!!
Has anyone managed to get on the wheel yet?
After a few token rotations last night it's been pretty empty and hasn't moved all morning.
