Greenwich Wheel

Since I haven't made it this weekend (I have been doing some splendid other stuff, about which more later...) I've appropriated Greenwich Lalas comments about the new wheel - which include some helpful tips. The photos are courtesy of Dave (naughty Phantom - zero effort on today's post. Must try harder...) Anyway, Greenwich Lalas says:

"I went on Saturday afternoon and queued no more than 10 mins, and was given a gondola with just the two of us in (don't waste your money on a private one, they pretty much will give that to you for free anyway).

I'd say 12 mins is a starting point not a guarantee, they're not overly strict on how long you spend on it. We had more like 15 mins and 4 revolutions on it before the staff unloaded us.

I like it, it looks lovely and is a nice way to spend a little bit of time. But deary me, it's a lot higher than it looks once you're in one of those little pods, swinging away. We were postively queasy for the entire first revolution!"

So - sounds like it's fun and pretty. I am especially looking forward to seeing it at night.

Anyone else been yet?

My son and I took to the wheel and yes I felt a little queasy too, but I do suffer from motion sickness - mainly boats. The queasiness diminished after the first revolution. My son was giddy with excitement and was delighted to spot the Greenwich Wheel's big sister; the London Eye in the distance! Its a shame it's only here until the end of September - boo.

Thanks for the info Greenwich Lalas.

I've booked a pod for the end of July which works out cheaper when there's six of you. I took a look Saturday morning and there was no one queuing, so you pretty much walked straight on, think this might change over the coming weeks.

Looking forward to it and the opportunity to get some good photos of Greenwich although I don't like the "Swinging away" and "Positively queasy" bit.

Yes it is quite white knuckle compared to the London Eye, it goes faster and the pods swing but you get a great view and after the first turn you get used to the motion.

I went up on Friday afternoon. I was desperately unimpressed by the organisation of the staff, and the delayed opening, but the view from the top was worth it. Not one for vertigo sufferers, though.

Yes, dgeezer I have to agree with you on the staffing - not exactly a slick and professional operation but as you say, worth the shambles on terra firma for the aerial view.

Went on Saturday afternoon (2 adults 2 kids) - no queue whatsoever for tickets and then only waited 5 mins to be admitted to ride - fabulous service all round !!

Especially loved aerial views of park

Dave, would definitely agree about booking a private if there's 6 of you, you actually profit from it! I might do the same later on in the summer... but for two, just pay the basic fare.

The staff seem very young and a little confused, but all round a decent system. We recognised a few from our days as ice rink employees, so I'm sure they'll work it out to a t.

I was surprised to feel a bit nervy, it was more shock that I was scared more than anything! I think we imagined it was swinging much more than it was! Greenwich does look beautiful up there though///
