Scaremongering - or Real Threat?
- Greenwich Park is too small. Full Stop.
This isn't from locals like us, this is from the riders who'll have to use it. - Nothing will be left afterwards - it will all be removed.(not necessarily a bad thing in my humble opinion - TGP)
- Sadly much of Greenwich Park's infrastructures - paths, flowerbeds; possibly ancient trees - will have to be removed to take the temporary stuff.
- The Park may have to close for a year.
- Friends of Greenwich Park haven't heard anything about this.
- We're promised a "consultation."
Now. Is this a spot of scaremongering on the part of those who don't want the events to take place at Greenwich ('those' being - well, practically everyone except the Olympic committee, it seems - many local people who can't see how it can all be fitted in without massive congestion, damage to the park and loss of important facilities and important historic sites AND the bloomin' riders themselves who don't want to have to turn on a sixpence just to get out of their horseboxes) - or is it a real possibility?
Could we actually lose the use of our beloved park for a whole year leading up to the event, and god-knows-how-long after the games with only the assurances of the Olympic Committee (who, let's face it don't give a damn what happens after those few weeks in 2012; they're certainly not planning on using any of the £24m allocated to create any kind of 'legacy') that they won't have trashed it permanently. Most of me is staying perfectly calm here. It's a good rallying call for people who care about the history, wildlife, trees, layout and sheer joy that Greenwich Park can give, and giving us a kick up the proverbial backside with a shock is a good thing. But a small part of me is beginning to worry even more about these Equestrian events than I was before. Those trees have survived over three hundred years. They were planted by Charles II. They've survived horticultural fashion trends, the arrival of Science and TWO-BLOOMIN'-WORLD WARS. If they don't have to actually cut them down to get the horses past them, the thundering of hooves will compact the ground to the point where they die anyway.
THERE JUST ISN'T ROOM. For heaven's sake, Olympic Committee, if you won't listen to local people, listen to your own athletes. They want to use Badminton or Lee Valley - to create a spacious, purpose built course for huge crowds. They know what's best for them to win medals. Do you really want the whole of the International Equestrian World grumbling about our rubbish facilities, just so the TV cameras get a nice picture in the background? Shame on you.
There's one thought I've been having whilst writing this, which I wonder whether anyone has actually considered yet. I began to wonder why the games couldn't just shift a little over onto Blackheath - big open space, lots of room, yada-yada. Then I thought. Of course - they can't use Blackheath because it's riddled with holes - as we've discussed on numerous occasions - great chalk caverns just beneath the surface that could fall in at a moment's notice - at the instant of hoof upon ground. A thoroughbred eventer could end up 20ft under the earth's crust, creating at best An Embarrassing International Incident.
Bet you can guess where this one's going.
Greenwich Park, too, is full of holes. Many of them man-made, but holes all the same. Those medieval passages may be brick-lined (and of historic value, incidentally) but they are, nevertheless, medieval and possibly not at their strongest any more. Even the youngest are 300-odd years old. And there may be a wall separating the park from the heath but I can't imagine that the chalk caverns finish at that wall. If the committee insist on Greenwich Park as a venue for pretty's sake, could they end up with a horse and rider in a hole deeper than Princess Caroline's bath?
Just a thought. In the meanwhile, I'm taking deep breaths, sticking with the Friends of Greenwich Park's circumspection, and assuming that this is a story cooked up to fire-up people like me. I confess I have no faith in that weasel-word "consultation." All it means is that they ask us what we think, we tell them and they ignore us. If it comes down to it, and our Park is either going to be mutilated - or closed for a year or more, I shall be first at the barricades, cloak swirling, pistols blazing and swash buckling...

I must admit that if there is any truth in this story , it is very scary! I am pretty sure the park is just too darn small for those sort of horsey shennanigans. Although with all the holes and caves around it could become Event Pot Holeing, that would be ....interesting.
I was under the impression that just the Showjumping would be happening in the park in front of the Queens House and stabling to the rear. I did see a mocked up image of that somewhere.
Yup its too small for the Eventing surely, its got to be , right .....?
Maybe the whole thing needs to be scaled down. Limit horses to Shetland ponies and only small children or dwarfs allowed to take part. They can do a little course around the children's playground, and they would be allowed to splash through the pond as long as they could prove they wouldn't upset any paddleboats.
Or maybe smaller. Only fairies allowed to ride thoroughbred toads...
Now your talking Phantom.......ahh Toads and little Fairies......with riding hats for protection of course, we dont want to have to take them to Fairy A&E.
...fashioned from hazlenut shells...
Ooer- I feel "Queen Mab" coming on. Better go and have a lie-down...
I have to say that on a personal basis I'm madly excited about the equestrian events being held in Greenwich park. I've done some eventing in my childhood though and I can't see for the life of me how they'll fit it all in. I suspect that they have done their projections on the basis of normal attendance at these events which is not amazingly huge, at least for the dressage and showjumping side of things. The cross-country event is actually made of of three sections though. "Roads and tracks" (bit like a time trial but you must walk and trot some sections run over 5-6 miles plus), a steeplechase section over fences (go as fast as you like), and the really fun bit, the cross country section. I would say that that the Queens House is eminently suitable for the dressage and showjumping sections of 3-day eventing. Amazing backdrop and probably about the right sort of size. It's probably a bit small for the proper showjumping event but with the right temporary seating in a pinch it would work. Olympia could also be used for it and would probably give better capacity as it's likely to be far more popular in the UK than say Hong Kong this summer.
Re stabling - events are likely to be run one after the other so most horses will only be there for a couple of days while actually competing. Any decent prospect would wait and keep training outside of London until the last possible point (vet checks etc a couple of days before) so they have plenty of space to exercise. Greenwich park certainly won't be open to them.
As I see it, the major problem is the 3-day eventing cross country section. Average attendence at something like Badminton is 200,000 spread out over some serious acreage. Where organisers can put those sort of numbers as well as the course I don't know. I hope they can pull it off and I do think that talk of closing the park for 1 year is probably total b#ll##ks. I can't imagine what on earth they can find to spend £24m on unless Royal Parks are absolutely killing them on a fee for the use of the park. Having said ALL that, if it turned out to be true, I'd be all for moving the event to a more rural location. I'd quite happily put up with the inconvenience of the traffic etc for a few weeks for the opportunity to watch something this fantastic on my doorstep.
Even toads and fairies thumping around could damage the archaeology - the barrows and tunnels we know about, but what about what we don't. And the answer is not hurried excavations before 2012 (large scale digs which would effectively shut off great expanses of the park for years). It's (relatively) safe where it is - except for the mad police-car racers driving across the grass. And we don't mind missing out on the financial benefits of renting to horses on the ground floor, riders on the first, and stable lads where we can squeeze them in.
I think the problem is summed up by this comment from the Olympic Committee spokesman:
"We chose Greenwich Park for equestrian and modern pentathlon events because it is an iconic location which will provide a spectacular backdrop in London in 2012."
Any other country would have chosen a location for its size, accessibility and suitability for the event. Some idiot somewhere clearly thought that squashing events normally located in 1500 acres (Badminton) into the 183-acre Greenwich Park would be fine: it doesn't matter about the facilities, course or safety, just as long as the spectators get some pretty scenery.
I was also under the impression that the Olympics were sold to Londoners (and paid for by our taxes) on the basis of the legacy facilities?
This is as much of a farce as the mountain-biking event - though at least with mountain-biking, officials from the IOC came over, agreed with everything the competitors and the sport mags had been saying and ordered the organisers to change the location. I wonder if the equestrian IOC reps have taken a look at the site yet?
Yes it seems like it was a nice idea but completely impractical - there's far better London venues which could host it anyway - Hyde park, Richmond Park, Windsor etc..
I, for one would not be happy at the prospect of even one tree being felled just for a couple of days horseyness!!
What are the Squirrels and foxes likely to be doing with all this 'work' going on around them? Let alone the other smaller and less obvious occupants of this wonderful space.
Do they have to ask for Regal permission to put on such a show? Shouldn't there be a public consultation or something?
I can understand they have to have all the 'Human' Track and Field in the same place but how many of the Athletes will be competing in both human and horse events?
But I suppose it's like most things of this nature......we will be told in due course....Not asked, told!!
I believe the floors of the House of Commons and House of Lords are both roughly the size of tennis courts.
Maybe I should suggest to the Olympic committee these as a venue for the Tennis Tornanment!
I think the Olympic Committee has been misquoted appallingly here.
You'll actually find that what really said was as follows:
"We chose Greenwich Park (also Woolwich, Horse Guards Parade, and Pically Circuse for the tiddly winks) etc. because we thought they'd look bloody marvellous for the video and then everyone would say they've done jolly well and given it their very best shot - poor sods. I mean, no one imagined for one moment that we'd actually get the f***ing thing ... and now that we have, well it looks as if we may have to outsource the whole shebang, see if we can get it called the Eurogames and get the Gravy Train Robbers to pick up the tab. I mean, I had to borrow a fiver for the cab to get here!!!"
We MUST stop this from happening! I can't believe such long term damage could be allowed for three weeks 'sport'?!
I guess at this point we should all keep our ears open and encourage the equestrian 'sport' experts to speak out on this folly.
Failing that, we can all hop on the DLR and set fire to Stratford...
I REALLY hope this isn't true - I walk in that park a few times a week on my quest to get fitter - where else can I enjoy a few hours walk a day round here?
Also the thought of any tree being ripped up horrifies me - I'm always appalled when I see the state of the park during the marathon and thats only for a few hours!
I like to think that no-one in their right mind would rip up a historical park for a few days Olympics, but our Govt have already proved me wrong on that count by spending fortunes we simply dont have on this farce!
hmmm, Britain gets the Olympics and then announces an economic recession... is there a link?!
Phantom, assuming that this is a story cooked up to fire-up people like me.
No, it isn't cooked up, it's true. The British Equestrian Foundation have been saying for most of the past 12 months that the Park is too small. The course designer wants to have horses jumping in and out of the garden at the top of the Park and to demolish the steep bit on the east of the Park. The local populace are not going to be told anything official until the plans are "locked down", around the time of the Beijing Olympics probably. When it will be too late to avoid the utmost disruption to the lives of local residents and businesses. Two local amenity societies have been completely hijacked by forceful and self-serving individuals who see personal advantage in giving the Govt what it wants.
I am one of those who believes that one four hundred year old tree is more important than two weeks of Olympic equestrian events. And far more important than anyone actually running the London Olympics.
Phantom, Friends of Greenwich Park haven't heard anything about this
I am afraid that that is not true, either. It may be that the Friends membership haven't heard anything about it but the chair of the Friends committee (or whatever the top officer is called) has known about this for at least the past year.
Oh, look, while Kew is talking about the importance of trees and spending a fortune on an elevated walkway (designed by the people who designed the beautiful London Eye) to enable visitors to admire their ancient trees better,
"Professor Steve Hopper, director of [Kew] gardens, said: 'At no other point in history have trees been more important to us. It's very clear that trees and their role in the carbon cycle, and supporting us in terms of food, medicine and timber, are increasingly important. We really have to care for trees.'"
- the wretched Olympics organisers are planning to CUT DOWN as many trees in Greenwich Park as they want for a two-week fling.
"We really have to care for trees", LOCOG are you listening? Send the equestrian events to Badminton. They have the space, the experience, the road access.
The length of the three day event course is a minimun of 6400 meters . It has to be 10m wide . If we assume that a further 10m each side of the course will also have to be clared of obstructions then the course and safety area will be about 190,000 sq. m . The total area of the park is about 1,000,000 .Therefore the actual course will take up about 20% of the park. When I refer to obstructions this is the new name for three hundred year old trees . I have tried to walk a course every time I visit the park and cannot see how the cousre will fit in the park . If you phone the BEF they will advise that they think the park will be closed for a period of 18months before the games. After the games I would imagine to return the park to us will take the same time . Can you imagine that once the games are over the greenwich legecy will be a destroyed park . Also I would think to fit in the other required facilities they would also use heath . They would use it for the stables, the indoor riding facility , car parking for officials, VIPs ect, maybe a helicopter landing area . If they are planning to destroy the park why should they care about the heath .
Well said, Phantom! I'm doing everything I can to alert people about this completely loony plan. "Iconic" is one of those words like "mission statement" that rings warning bells. Oh yes, and "legacy", and "job opportunities". Isn't the Olympics supposed to be about regenerating run-down areas? There's an on-line petition - sign up to it now!
I recently attended the AGM of the friends of greenwich park . The policy of this organisation is to accept and they have accepted the plans to destroy the park as something that is final and settled and nothing that can be done about it . One of the members did mention that it would be possible to call a members meeeting and change the policy i.e to actively oppose the destruction of the park and its possible closure for up to three years .
The obvious vehilce to use to fight these olympic proposals is the Friends of Greenwich Park .
Therefore I would like to invite like minded people to contact me by email to discuss a campaign to stop the use of the park for the omlypics . My email is jod@corpshop.com
but don't forget Romney Road will closed for the duration and will give them lots of room for spectators - and such a pretty view for the cameras.
so what was the vote at FoGP meeting yesterday? Did Our MP cover himself with glory? Was any truth told or revealed?
Was I correct in hearing that the enduring legacy for greenwich, apart from being " Sold" or " put on the map" , would be riding for the disadvantaged?
Also I paid a lot of money to sponsor tree planting behind boating pond in memory of deceased family and wonder how safe those saplings to be.
I hear thet said saplings are being used by youths with Staffs to sharpen their canines for fighting. Could these be the same youths who our MP feels are in the majority and want X country in park eg 15 year olds from Roan School, unlike 40+ peeps who are out of touch... oh but do have a vote.
