Photography Competition

...Aha - thought that would make you look...

Yes indeedy, folks, the good burghers at The Friends of East Greenwich Pleasaunce are running a competition to coincide with their latest Summer get together on June 8th. After the last couple of washouts, let's hope they have better weather for their summer kneesup, because if you want to enter, you'll have to go along...

The exact stalls are, I'm told, yet to be decided, but will include the usual faves, which I'm assuming will include books, cakes and punch plus others, something for the kids and perhaps the local fire service.

But onto the comp. You need to get over to the Pleasaunce and start snapping now (well perhaps not quite now unless you like capturing artistic drips from ancient anchor-shaped gravestones...) The only rules are that it has to be all your own work and it has to be recognisably East Greenwich Pleasaunce. There will be a mystery prize courtesy of Ivor Howell Cameras in Westcombe Hill and entrants will be eligible for a planned exhibition at Viewfinder Photography Gallery in the Autumn.

Now - no sending the stuff to me, ok? I mean - yes - by all means send me pictures of anything you like (see my FAQs for how that works) but if you want to enter the competition, you need to bring the picture(s) along to the shindig on June 8th. If you have any questions about the competition please email pleasauncefriends@hotmail.co.uk

mmmm, cakes... forget the photography competition (they'd probably take one look at my attempt and stick it in the kids' section), I'm very interested in cakes in the Pleasaunce.

Which reminds me, for those who don't get that esteemed local newspaper, the News Shopper, there are plans to open a cafe in the Pleasaunce this summer. Yum yum.

Ah - yes, thanks Kirsty - I forgot to thank you for the link...

And no - I STILL don't get the News Shopper, Mercury or Guide, though I do get the terminally rubbish Greenwich Time (which now at least has Tony Lord but I'll swear is coming out at least twice a week just now)and Meridian.

I haven't had the News Shopper delivered for a couple of years now, but news of the Pleasaunce cafe can be found in the Westcombe News(along with more typical doom'n'gloom headlines about why Chinooks flying above are bad for the area).

Personally, I like a Chinook, and so does my 2 year old.

If I can see one while eating cake in the Pleasaunce, so much the better.

So should I warn my friends that if they happen to see strange men with cameras loitering near the kiddies' playground in the Pleasaunce, they really shouldn't worry? And if a man happens to ask if the kids want to look at his pet toad eating cake, that too is perfectly ok?!

Talking of newspapers, the Mercury came through my door an hour or so ago. The distribution phone number is 020 8710 6487, if you want to call and find out why you're not getting a copy?

There doesn't seem to be much of interest. The Post Offices are to be closed, despite the 'consultation' (yeah right). Berkely Homes has an ad in which they've run all the words together: "presentingsubmittedplansforhtere-developmentatRoyal [breathe] Arsenal,Wo [breathe again]oolwich"

Anyway, the exhibition is at Greenwich Heritage Centre, Fri 16 May 4-8pm and Sat 17th, 10-4. The link is www.greenissues.com/royalarsenal, if you're interested in the development of the Royal Arsenal and the crossrail station (may be too far outside the Greenwich remit?!)

There's an article on the Creekside Centre, and Tony Lord talks about an excursion by rail to see the Blackpool illuminations. And, er, that's about it, really.
