Mysterious Marquee
I've been wondering myself - I had thought that it was perhaps something to do with the new Obsevation Wheel - though it seems a bit early and in the wrong place for that.
Owen wondered if it had something to do with the beer festival, and Anon thought it might be yet another film shoot.
My current best-guess is a temporary visitor centre while they dicker with the new "Discovery Greenwich" building, though why on earth they would think that was a good venue for it is beyond me.
Fear not, though, folks, I have emailed the ORNC - perhaps they'll let us know what's going on...

I do beleive it has something to do with a Charity Ball of some sort. There were notices put up in regard to a temporary Drinks License a while back. For some reason I think the charity does work with kids, but I could very well be wrong (it happens a lot)
Ah - that could be it. It does look more like a function sort of thing - and the Painted Hall will be closed from 4.00 on Sunday. Must be soemthing pretty special to spoil the look of the place on a bank holiday weekend.
It is, according to one of my reliable sources (one of whom is the Assistant Director of Music at the ORNC Chapel) that it is for a concert featuring (and don't quote me if I'm wrong) the band Aerosmith... God knows why!
LOL! Aerosmith?!
In a tent?
In Greenwich?
wow.
Love in an Elevator!
Love in a tent! Dude!
No way! or Yes way?
I, too thought it was for the Beer and Jazz festival.......any ideas as to where that will be held? Although a couple of weeks ago I was wondering past and over heard a couple of Techie types talking about the sighting of Lasers!!! Could they being trying to 'shoot' the helicopters in some new computer game come to life????
Hmmm....Perhaps Aerosmith are combining with the Jazz guys in a Charidy bash for the kiddies while helicopters are lit up in an aerial choreography by the lasers...yeah I'm sure I read about it somewhere..........
Do you reckon those people who moaned about the Stella Artois screenings in the park a couple of years back will have a go at Aerosmith too?
Who moaned about it ?
They were great!
Especially the first one , when it was free!
We could do with some more of those events , like all the free concerts they have in Canary Wharf of a summer.
I've heard - from a pretty reliable source - that it's a charity event with tables costing loads (£50k a pop...) for the showbiz-charity-auction set and it's all ultra hush hush. And that Frank Inc is behind it all.
"residents" complained about the noise.
Personally I loved it - especially the first one. We went to see Back to the Future - and it was an amazing atmosphere. Everyone cheered the goodies and booed the baddies - people were drinking - but it was such a friendly atmosphere that kids were completely safe. And there was no trouble (unless you count the disgraceful amount of litter given the number of bins available) It was one of my best summer nights in Greenwich ever...
here hear Phantom! it was indeed a great night, me and my partner had a load of chums went over with a right royal picnic and a brilliant night was had by all, great laugh , no trouble , good vibes,so good luck Aerosmith and your 50k charity tables.
I have only just stopped laughing to write this. The comments made regarding Aerosmith, in a tent, in Greenwich. Brilliant!
I mean brilliant comments, not brilliant Aerosmith! (although I'm sure they are)
hello
I just happened on your blog and comments re the mysterious marquee! :)
I work in QMC and my window looks out onto the building work...
I just decided to google it...
anyway, I don't know about aerosmith and helicopters....but have been told that the whole set up whihc will take four weeks to go up, and two weeks to dismantle, for the six hour event, is costing 1.5 million. and the charity is hoping to raise 23 million on the night!!
