Patisseries/Bakeries in Greenwich
I wondered if you happened to know any good bakery / patisserie in Greenwich? We're looking for something French if possible, similar to Paul's.
The Phantom replies:
To my great sadness no, I don't. Not in Greenwich. A couple of places - the fishmonger, the cheesemonger, the deli - sell the odd loaf of bread, there is a stall on the market and Buenos Aires up Royal Hill sells slices of cake and sweet little natas tarts. But there's no dedicated patisserie/bakery I know of; one of the more glaring gaps in the Greenwich Pantheon of shops. There is a (literal) bakery around the back of the Power Station - but it only makes bread - as far as I know there is no retail outlet.
People looking for business ideas, take note.
Indeed, they should take note of Blackheath, which has not one, but two fabulous patisserie/bakeries, almost next door to each other. Of the two, the exquisite Hand Made Foods I tend to think of as more of a deli than Boulangerie Jade, which is, I suspect, exactly what you're looking for. Melting cakes, wonderful bread, rolls and croissants and good coffee are just the start of it. Ok - so it's a bus ride or a brisk walk across the heath - but it should just mean you have even more room for the lovely gooey goodies purveyed.
I am not always jealous of Blackheath. In fact, I'm not usually jealous of Blackheath. But I do envy them their baked goods. Wonderful.

Cafe Buenos Aires apparently gets its pastries etc from Boulangerie Jade ... which would explain their yumminess (& means you don't have to trek to Blackheath - or Paul in Canary Wharf) for breakfast.
It's all about good things in unexpected places:
Would you believe that there is in fact a Paul's in the Maritime Museum? Unfortunately it's a bit of an 'airport' version - a limited menu of sandwiches and pastries, no loaves of bread.
Another strange one: try the cheese shop on Royal Hill for tarts and pastries. They don't have lots, but they are pretty good.
I'd second the Buenos Aires suggestion. Has anyone tried the new deli on Nevada street, across from the Rose & Crown?
Gregor - yes and it's good. Their hot pies are delicious, if a little pricey.
Forgive a stupid question, but is The Fishmonger closed? They used to do some nice loaves of fresh bread, but I haven't seen them open the last few times I've walked by.
I must confess we buy our fresh bread from Blackheath.
They opened a shop just off Royal Hill so just open the Trafalgar Rd shop in the mornings I believe.
There's a place called "Use your loaf" or some such along Turnpin Lane just off the covered market.
They could produce nice bread if they put their mind to it but seem to concentrate on baking pizza, biscuits, and various pasty-type creations. They serve a decent coffee (and have an upstairs seating area) but I've never felt tempted to try their food.
STOP PRESS:
I just saw a new shop being prepared in Trafalgar Road (near (EGO.) I asked the guy what it was and he told me it will be a pantry-style bakery/deli, specialising in organic and gluten-free stuff. It will be opening in a week or so.
Where is the fishmonger's just off Royal Hill?
Now that the pound shop has opened next to Somerfield's, West Greenwich finally has it all!
(except a patisserie...)
;-)
Never mind - just found their very good website
http://www.thefishmongerltd.com
This also has the opening hours of both shops - the Trafalgar Rd shop should be open 9-5 all days but Sunday and Monday.
ooo is the new bakery place on trafalgar road called 'greenwich pantry' or something similar? just near alacosta coffee? will be great to have another nice shop on trafalgar road.
i'm a bit worried about the fishmonger on trafalgar road, i walked past yesterday before 5 and it was shut. i hope east greenwich isn't loosing one of its best shops to west greenwich?
Don't forget "Greggs"!
There is an empty shop in Royal Hill, I believe in between the butchers and cheeseshop, that would make an excellent bakers!
For breakfast, has anyone tried the Deptford Properly in Tanners Hill? (I appreciate not in Greenwich)A great place, who do a lovely breakfast.
I'm sure I heard that planning permission has been put in for that shop on Royal Hill - don't know what the shop will be though.
Fingers crossed for a bakers!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for all who were hoping for a bakery between the Cheeseboard and Drings on Royal Hill - we're getting a glass shop.

Now, I'd never be one to sniff at a "new exciting and independent glass retail concept" - I mean, why use the word "shop" when you can say "retail concept" and it almost makes sense?
But perhaps - just perhaps - we now have enough "concepts" in the centre of Greenwich?
Sorry to be the bearer of even badder tidings but I don't think we're even going to get that. The guy apparently discovered structural problems and so far has not been able to get permission to deal with them. I understand it was to be a glass shop on the ground floor and a cafe in the basement. I don't know why his application to deal with the structural problems has been denied. I can only assume that it was 'out of keeping' or something. Watch this space...
I know that the building was Grade II listed back in 2005 (apparently to prevent it from being gutted for a retail development). Perhaps it wasn't cost-effective to do the structural repairs, given the Grade II constraints (retaining internal walls etc.?)
But - looking for the bright side - perhaps we WILL get a bakery after all?
I strongly DON'T recommend 'Use Your Loaf'... worst croissants I ever tasted!
Wish I could champion an independent but... the best fresh croissants are from M&S! Sorry.
And the brilliant fishmongers is hidden away round the corner behind The Cheeseboard. Don't know if they have bread though.
Has anyone tried Greenwich Pantry, near Alacosta Coffee?
I don't know if you have noticed, but in college approach a bakery is almost ready to open!!!! it is called Rhodes bakery. Can't wait to buy bread from there.
