A Note On Photo Use

Folks - I just want to point out a little thing about pictures on this site.

Most of the photos (well, the rubbish ones, really) on this blog are by me. But I also get sent pictures by lots of different readers, who send them in good faith. Good faith that they are sent to ME for use HERE.

I don't hold copyright to these pictures - it's retained by the original photographers. It's always easy to see if I'm using someone else's work because I credit them every time, usually in the body of the piece because of the weird way that Blogger formats photos.

If there's a picture I'VE taken on the blog, you are welcome to use it (I'd appreciate a credit but it's not essential.) Go ahead.

But I CANNOT give permission to use any picture taken by someone else that appears here. Please contact me if you want to use someone else's photographs and I will put you in touch with them. Don't just nick the picture. It's bad manners.

Blimey. I'm a grumpy old Phantom today. So in order to cheer myself up I've been going through said photos and have found this one apropos to nothing, from Benedict, showing the Amazing Harrier Jump Jet Crows of Blackheath.
Cue renditions of When I See An Elephant Fly...

That is disappointing behaviour from the otherwise good folk over at Greenwich Watch - particularly the cheeky claim to have received it from a reader when Methers says they nicked it, and the ex post claim to 'surprising serendipity'.

I hope you sent them A VERY STERN EMAIL, Phantom.

And if Greenwich Watch are reading this - poor showing chaps.

Maybe photos need to be watermarked, though that would be a bit sad... still, it would be quite cool to have a little ghost lurking somewhere in every picture. Maybe in the phone box? Sitting on the bench? Spot the Phantom... :-)

Nice comment by Methers under the nicked pics though. Leaves Greenwich Watch looking rather red-faced!

Whether on one's own site or by posting a picture to a forum like this, you are quite simply putting your picture into the public domain where it is copyable.

If that is an issue for anyone then the possible options are very clear: 1. don't post your picture OR 2.watermark your shot within the body of it.

TIP TIME: The special copyright symobol that you see on films and magazines can be got by typing '[ALT+Hold] + 0169' which gives us: ©

Also pictures can be copied by right clicking on the image and 'saving as ...'.

You may see some sites which tell you that 'picture sharing has been disabled' if you try right clicking. Oh no it hasn't. Just click letf and right simultaneously.

That's just how easy it is you see.

I'm not saying it isn't easy - just that it's poor manners. I am extremely flattered that people (often professionals) send me their work - and I take it quite seriously that they have entrusted me with it.

I will look into watermarks - though I feel a bit uneasy about putting MY watermark on someone else's work. (I love the idea of 'hunt the phantom,' Kirsty)

If any of you send me pics and have professional websites that you'd like me to link to, please let me know.
