I was just about to write about this neglected little corner of Westcombe Park - and what a sad little area it was, when Serendipity sent me a mail from Methers, who at least made me giggle - even if really it's no laughing matter...
This little nook - on the corner of Dinsdale Road and Vanbrugh Hill - should be lovely. It's sheltered, there's a sweet little bench and a phone box there. It should have an air of bucolic charm, half way up what has to be one of the steepest hills in Greenwich (and let's face it, we have a few to choose from) - an opportunity to take a break and catch your breath while looking out over London. What it actually is amounts to Tag City - a mess of inarticulate daub; a scream of frustration from a voice that has realised it has nothing to say.
I'm not totally against street art - at its best it has a dynamism and visceral quality that lends it a power and gives its purveyors a means of communicating through a vibrant artistic medium. But this - this has nothing. No merit, no power, and worse - no hope.
The people that create this have no vision of their lives as anything more to look forward to than the fumes they can breathe from their marker pens. For a few short seconds while they're wielding a spray can, they can feel they have a purpose before sinking back into the anger that will prevent them from becoming anything.
"Look, World. I am skilled enough to take a cap off a pen and point it at a stationary object. I am dextrous enough to make a mark. Respect me."
And what for the rest of us? To get angry ourselves? Or to get even? How about a bit of both? Methers sent me this photo - with a most convincing 'notice' from Greenwich Council:
Let's take a closer look, eh...

Methers notes
"who ever made the sticker made a very professional job of it. The colour, the typeface, everything looks authentic. It couldn't be a strange attempt by the council to try to put the taggers off, could it?"Who can tell. But I can't help thinking that he has a point when he continues"I know someone would probably be upset by this, but I do think of asking BT to take the phonebox away. There's another one just down the hill for anyone who needs one, and it just seems to attract graffiti and vandalism. Am I being an old misery? Could we make it a lovelier spot, with another bench and some nice plants?"Excellent idea. Any volunteers?

Awesome. I'd like to see more of these amusing notices. The sad thing is that they'll get removed, probably by the council, a whole lot quicker than the graffiti.
I like that sticker......a lot.
I would more than willingly give some time to the UBC (Urban Beauty Crew).
Sticker reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live sketch featuring newly-elected NYC mayor Guiliani. He announced the city's new plan to crack down on graffiti was to paint "sucks" underneath every gangsta's tag.
We pass this spot several times a day and never see anything productive happening there. One couple sits there and drinks out of paper bags, occassionally some teens will be loitering, most of the time it's ignored and neglected.
I don't have a solution, but I wouldn't miss that phone box.
Love the sticker... but where is it? It doesn't appear to be on the phone box on the original photo. And the graffiti is different too, though the background appears to be the same. Were the pics taken at different times? V confused...
Did you ever find a home for Little Green Space's offer of a free flower box for a spot that needs cheering up?!
Ha ha ha. Greenwich Council resorts to 'cussing the mumz' (sic) of graffiti youths.
There is a waggish wit loose amongst us in our community. Long may they continue.
A little bench there would be a perfect notion except that no one stops for a rest on a park bench anymore.
The older folk who used to enjoy this pasttime very much as I recall from my younger days are sealed up in their homes with Countdown for company instead of the threat (real or imagined) of urban aggro; and traffic undoubtedly has a big impact.
You can't stop here long trying to sun yourself before the noise and pollution of the cars makes you move on.
They call it progress don't they!
You see that dog-poo on the pavement? - that's your mum, that is.
Yes - the pictures were taken at different times. I had taken the top pic, and was going to talk about the sad little area a couple of weeks ago, and didn't for sundry reasons. Then Methers sent me the other pics (more recent - if you're quick you'll catch the sticker...)
So the top pic has older graffiti, clearly cleaned off a week or so before this new lot. Different tags, applied with the same amount of skill...
If the genius who created those stickers has some spare, could we have one for the children's play ground on Dabin Cressent?
I agree - most of that graffiti appeared within days of the play area being spruced up. Very annoying and, indeed, depressing...
cheers for the explanation. I was wondering if perhaps the Council had got to the sticker already - if so, it would be an astoundingly unusual act of efficiency on its part...
I've never noticed that corner before, despite running up that hill regularly. If the phone box was replaced with a water fountain, it would be a perfect stopping point - but I might not get started again!
Watch out for Greenwich Watch!

They're nicking your material (and my pics)!
Cheeky bastards!
Outstanding! Happy to help with some local beautification. Perhaps we could involve some of the John Roan pupils in the refurb since they are the likely taggers - give them somewhere to hang out and shoot the breeze on the way home from school and an interest in not trashing it.
I didn't know there was ANOTHER Greenwich blog.
To be honest it's all rather dry - I don't think I'll be giving up the Phantom yet.
Ah yes - but we're all doing something different - Greenwich Watch Deptford Dame, Tunnelbore, Industrial History etc - each of us has a different angle on things (not sure what my 'angle' is, but you know what I mean...)and different stuff to say.
It's worth checking us all from time to time - luckily we're not exclusive - you can read everyone and no one gets cross (or even needs to know - your secrets are safe with me...) I firmly believe we all have something to contribute.
I was mildly miffed (mainly on Methers's behalf) about this - but I think it was a genuine mistake - and let's face it I make 'em all the time myself.
I've listed several local blogs on the links page but its nowhere near all-inclusive (I'm a bit embarrassed about that and am slowly working to get them all listed,) so check other people's links pages too. Between us we'll get there...
Please take a look at this updated post:

We are sorry if it appeared that we stole photos or stories, we didn't there was a bit of confusion. No need to get all nasty about it.
Greenwich Watch
All forgotten, GW.
Strange how things escalate, isn't it. Stranger, really, when you think that we all want the same thing - a better Greenwich.
After all that argy bargy, perhaps we should be looking for a positive solution. As I was reading yesterday's G2 I saw that the answer may be Guerrilla Gardening.
All it would take would be a few volunteers, some plants and a dark moonless night (yes, there are streetlights, but it sounds good) and we could tart up that corner right nice. I doubt we could get rid of the phone box on our own though; higher powers would be required for such a task.
Would such a covert task appeal to a local Phantom?
its a few tags, who cares.
get over yourselves.
