Book Clubs
I was wondering if you knew of any book clubs in Greenwich?
The Phantom replies:
I just did a quick google and could only find messages from people looking to join one... I suspect that your best bet will be taking a quick look around the libraries - maybe on the noticeboards - or perhaps Greenwich Community College. But I bet that this is just the sort of thing you lovely folks will know about. Can anyone help Esther?
If you're going to one, make sure you choose a nice Greenwich-related book - I've reviewed a few in the books section...

Do you mean reading groups? most of the local libraries have 'reading groups' attached - there is one at both East and West Greenwich libraries, and there is one for residents on the millennium village.
I assumed that 'reading groups' were for adult literacy programmes? Sorry if I got that wrong...
No - they all read a book and then discuss it.
I've seen advertisements for book clubs at Waterstones and Open Door at Blackheath High School on Mycenae Road - sort of honourary Greenwich. I know there are several private groups going, but it's harder to break into those.
We'd be very interested to start / host / take part in a new 'Greenwich' book club - particularly if other participants were interested in a Greenwich and/or historical naval emphasis (we're mad-crazy on historical naval fiction).
Of course, we're open to, read, and would love to discuss all varieties of old and new writing.
If anyone is interested in a local book club (of any variety), please feel free to contact me on franklin@onetel.com - we'll see what we can organise.
Cheers,
Franklin
PS. Phantom - a shameless plug... ;-)
Waterstones in Greenwich does a have a book club, Also a Gay and Lesbian book club.
Esther,
Me and a couple of friends are loking to start a book club in Greenwich. We would be interested in hearing from you. Do you know anyone else who would be interested?
Jule
I know of a reading book club based in Dulwich/Peckham but Waterstones would be my first port of call too but naval fiction isn't really my thing .....
Hello
I'd be interested in joining a new book club in Greenwich...and may have a friend interested too...but I can't say either of us are interested in historical naval fiction - sorry...
Please let us know if one is starting up...

I am so pleased that I found this site, I have been trying to set up a book club for ages but none of my friends are interested. I would be happy to take responsiblility for organising dates and times etc so please feel free to email me at emilieharris175@hotmail.com and we can go from there.
I would prefer to read a selection of novels perhaps a mixture of modern titles with a few of the classics thrown in for good measure, that way we get a nice mix and better discussion.
I propose that everyone picks a book and each month one group member hosts the session to discuss their book choice. (which everyone will have read!) Members can either choose to host in a public place such as a coffee shop, or in their homes its entirely up to them.
I don't think it matters how many people their are but I would say six is probably a good minimum number so that their can be a nice flow and good discussions. If anyone has any friends they wan't to bring along then that would be great to get the numbers up (at the moment its just me!)
I really hope that we can get this book club together soon so please get in contact if you're interested and we can arrange a first meeting when everyone is available.
Thank you for all the responses.
Jule, Daisy and Emilieharris -
I would definitely be interest in being involved in such a book club and will email emilieharris today.
Hopefully see you at one of the meetings.
Thanks
Esther
