Romantic Greenwich

Well - it is St Valentine's Day, after all. And The Phantom is going all gooey on you. I am on a quest to find the most romantic place in Greenwich and I want your personal favourites. I don't care where it is - a restaurant, a quiet corner of Greenwich Park, round the back of the bicycle sheds - it just has to be romantic for you.

Lovely stories, Our Song-stylee, optional, but I am looking for geographical specifics. If it's Greenwich Park I want GPS co-ordinates (no, not really - a good description will do). If it's a cosy restaurant, which table is the best? A street? Which corner? The Picturehouse? Which seat? If it's Blackheath Tea Hut, I want to know what time of day/year you love most. If it's the bike sheds - well, ok, you can keep that one to yourselves.

I'm not necessarily talking about relationship-style romance either. Just a Greenwich place that really moves you to think lovely thoughts, that gives you a warm glow inside...

For once, I'll chip in with my own two-penn'orth later, but for now I'll leave you with this picture I took on my sewer-quest last week, of an alarmingly-pruned Leylandii, proving that even bad gardening can be romantic...

The little secret garden ( which im sure isnt very secret at all) on the left up the main hill in greenwich. I think that its at the western base if the hill that the observatory sits on. Its small, secluded and beatiful in the summer.

The other is one tree hill, but for me greenwich is the perfect place for romance and definately the best place for a first date.

On a completely unrelated note, I tried the North Pole Resturaunt last night and was seriously unimpressed. Especially when the club downstairs fired up and the nice chilled out atmosphere was punctuated with DUM DUM DUM.

Happy Valentines Day all.

Do you mean the herb garden Shaun?

Nice shout. Yes - it's gorgeous.

I find the North Pole unexciting, rather than terrible. I went there when it first opened and it was fantastic, but it's very tired now. I haven't experienced the nightclub noise while I've been eating, but I doubt that it would win many votes for most romantic meal if it's that loud...

It certainly wouldn't. I'd much prefer one of the more intimate places in blackheath or even the Standard to that place.

I do love the herb garden but no, the are i mean is down from that awesome toilet block on the right hand side.

The Observatory Garden then?

Still a very good suggestion.

It was listed by that august publication The London Paper, the other day as one of the top five places for ilicit nookie...

Sorry if that brought the whole tone down. That's free papers (and free websites) for you...

Happy Valentines, Shaun...

I would have to say the little walk up from Maidenstone Hill to the bench at The Point. Beautiful views over London, almost better than at the Observatory.

Agreed re: the view from The Point, in my opinion far better than that from the Observatory. Sadly the preponderance of dog poo and teenagers burning things does bring down the romance factor somewhat but horses for courses and all that...

There are so many romantic nooks and crannies locally its hard to pick just one, but recently I love to be on the beach at low tide underneath the power station pier at Crowley's Wharf looking through its "legs" towards the Dome. (I dont know what my therapist will make of that!)

Re: the Point. How much of a crime would it really be to seriously crop and top the trees and bushes that obscure much of the views North and West.

Occasionally I go up there with my camera to try and get a decent sunset shot but all is branches and foliage.

By some quirk that I can't figure out, when one looks to Canary Wharf it actually looms larger than when seem from the Observatory viewpoint but an aerial view of the Point shows it to be set further back. Funny that!

On my first trip to England, my husband-to-be walked me through Royal Hill to one of the pubs. It wasn't until years later I realised he was showing me Greenwich, the place he wanted to settle down. The thought still makes my heart go pitter-patter, and I always have a soft spot for the pubs (don't remember which one it was, so they both rank high).

Ahhh. And of course there are actually four pubs along Royal Hill - The Union, Richard I, Prince Albert and The Hill...

All the more places to get romantic... It is lovely round there - it would certainly persuade me that I wanted to live here if Ididn't already of course.

You know what? I'm going to stop jabbering before I write any more nonsense...

Re the comments above about North Pole:

I went there last night (for the first time) and I can only say it was a very good evening. It was admittedly a totally atypical night. Being Valentines Day the restaurant was completely full. But they seemed to cope with the increased numbers very well; the service was friendly and efficient and the food was good. For example they got our steaks just right - medium rare for me and well done for my wife. This detail is something that often goes wrong in a restaurant which is not coping.

I agree about the noise from the club downstairs. Last night it didn't seem to matter, but on a more typical weekday it might be a pain.

For actual Romance romantic then I'll say Abbeywood gardens near Lesnes Abbey in summer. The trees filled with pink blossoms and the air with their scent and the scents of the flowers all in bloom of colours. I had a special kiss their and will always remember her and the kiss there.
