The Phantom's Little Black Book
I'm not interested in just doing a list of services that people think 'aren't too bad,' or that just 'did the job.' I want the tradespeople that go that extra mile - the guys you can really put your hand on your heart and say you would recommend to your best friend. I don't care how short the list is as long as, hopefully, it's a worthwhile one.
I'm afraid I'm just about to be a bit exclusive now though. In order to make this work (and so I don't get any dodgy builders sending me glowing recommendations for themselves) I've had to make up a few rules and, newbies, you may get the hump with me at this point.
At the moment, "people I really trust" means those lovely folk who regularly contribute, non-anonymously, to The Phantom's daily blog.
You know who you are. Those of you who put your heads above the parapet and say stuff here on a regular basis. I don't mean real names, of course - just those people who, albeit with a nickname, have a presence here and I can feel I 'know.' Sadly, of course, "Anon" just doesn't cut it...
Tradespeople will be included at my whim, and all will carry the warning that just because they've done good work for me or someone I know doesn't mean they're going to be any good for you. Caveat Emptor...
The site will go live very soon. Look out, too, for the long-promised links section and a somewhat tongue-in-cheek FAQs page. Do let me know what you think. And if you have any suggestions for truly excellent entries, I'd be delighted to hear from you at the usual address...

Fantastic idea! Sadly my list of really excellent trades-people is pretty short but not totally blank. Looking forward to the new site.
To have a 'long' list isn't really the idea, Tom. We have the Yellow Pages and Thomspon for that. What I want is a list of tradespeople that folk feel they can call and at least have someone who has used the service before and liked it. It's a long, lonely journey trying to find good tradespeople. If we can make it one step shorter then that's fine by me. And I'd rather feel the quality than the width...
Can we also include the ones we'd like put against a wall and shot?;-) Although in fact the only person I'd like added to this list would be the former owner and self-styled 'DIY expert' of my current residence!!
You know, KN, I have thought long and hard about it. I have at least two people I would LIKE to shout to the rooftops about and tell people to avoid like the proverbial plague.
But I don't know where I'd stand legally on that one. Sadly libel laws apply to the internet too and I'm not a rich enough Phantom to fund a test case...
Again Phantom ,a really good idea . I am often asked "do you know any good......." and usually come up with a blank for all trades , certainly locally. Which is why this is such a genius idea, if excellent local trades get more work then the bar has been raised for all the other muppets! By the way do you have any good mold makers I'm having a casting disaster this morning.
Fantastic Idea. This blog simply continues to improve. I think you are right as well that it needs to be a short but succinct and relevant. Really can't wait.
Wonderful - my bathroom awaits in eager anticipation!
I shall put my thinking cap on, and I shall review the book as I become considerably poorer. The prospect of major building work looms...
Excellent news! I'll rule out my own enthusiastic diy from the list in advance! Can I please use my post to make a related request - I'll want to e-mail my plumber recommendation so you can peruse it first - but my 'click-through' email doesn't work as I have webmail - Phantom do you have a simple e-mail for the site that I can use for the list suggestions?
Also - I do like Knit Nurse's suggestion - can't we do a 'non faves' list too that avoids the libel but gives a nod towards shoddy? ;)
Sure, S&R.
thegreenwichphantom@gmail.com should get to me...
Hey Knit Nurse. Sure you can slag off local trades persons. I'm sure that you are aware that in this country everybody has a right to reply. so I take it that you will not only be listing their so called failures but you will also be using your true identity instead of hiding behind a nick name. Libel laws also apply to people posting on sites.

David - true, I guess a rival company could pretend to be a dis-chuffed customer and post whatever they like - but don't think TGP is planning that.
