Old Auction Rooms Planning Meeting
Ok, it's not going to win any prizes for its staggering beauty, but it is a good, solid building, a part of East Greenwich's past which could surely be adapted to a new purpose rather than just being bulldozed?
If you're interested, you can get details from Daniel.wilkinson@greenwich.gov.uk. I'm told it's the last item on the agenda so it could be any time between 6.30 and midnight.

Speaking of Lassels Street. I noticed the other day that Greenwich Inc has plans for the 'Commercial Property' between the Cutty Sark Pub and the Power Station. Surprise, Surprise it's going to be a Bar/Restaurant. Hopefully this won't be in direct competition with the Pub but......
It's about time something went in there but I would have thought that even Greenwich Inc would have noticed that there isn't the footfall from the tourists in that area, so could it support 2 Bar Restaurants?
I really think that the Cutty Sark is big enough to take on whatever Greenwich Inc can throw at it. Who knows - a little competition might make both places stronger. The Cutty Sark is a lovely old pub - it has charm and history. It will always have an audience.
I doubt they have tourists in mind. I suspect it's all the people who are going to move into the area when the Lovells Wharf development is finished. They're doing it now while it's still cheap, I suspect...
Its a real shame to lose the auction rooms, I wonder if Bob(is that his name?) has plans to move to another site. I dont think I will miss the building itself but the heady aroma of dusty furniture and bacon buttys I will miss, plus the thought of picking up a fantastic bargin and being entertained by the autioneers witty banter will be a real loss. My entire house has been furnished by the auction rooms and a great deal cheaper than Yuckea! It seems a real shame to lose this kind of buisiness from the area, I understand the need for developement but surely there is room for both. As to the proposed Ink Bar at the other end that was supposed to be a community centre but the rents are too high, a regular developers trick to get round planning restrictions.
Whoa! Calm down there, Benedict!
It's the OLD auction rooms we're talking about here, not the current ones. It's a mistake I made myself at first, but worry not - the auction is still going strong. The old auction rooms are opposite, next to the stone yard. (If memory serves, they're painted a rather fetching shade of lilac just now.)
I still think they're enough of a part of Greenwich's past to keep.
Oopps,my apoplogies I think a red mist came over me. Old auction rooms.....I see now, and I see from the councils quick response they are on the ball today as well as Le Phantome. Looking at the proposals its by no means a guaranteed thing, as 3 previous proposals have been turned down (if I've read that correctly)
Sorry once again for the mistake, the thought of more musty days out at the auctions has cheered me up no end!
So do we have to email this Daniel person if we want to go along to the Planning meeting? I couldn't find any info online...
Oh I found a link to the meeting: http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/9B1384D6-C8A6-4CE2-8C60-6DE68CA417AE/0/GreenwichAreaPlanningandEnvironmentCommitteeAgenda20February2008.pdf
So, can I get mroe information about the build from Daniel?
I understand so.
Benedict has whet my appetite for info on the new auction rooms now - but Phantom I will also go and have a look at the old ones. What's been happening with the building at the moment? And what are the possibilities I wonder.
If anyone is feeling the urge to splurge at the Greenwich Auctions, have a look at http://www.greenwichauctions.co.uk/.
Always plenty to see and say 'oh, I used to have one of those' or 'Granny would have loved to see that still in use'....LOL
ooh thanks Dazza I'll check it out x
Blowing my own trumpet, my own entry about the modern rooms can be found, ahem, here
ooh sorry - yes that's even better :)
