Car Mechanics

One to throw out to the floor today, folks.

Ruth asks:

Need to get my car MOT'ed. Any recommendations for a good reliable garage in Greenwich/Blackheath? Ideally an independent chappy.

The phantom replies:

Since I've been going to the same chap near where my Dad lives for years and years, which involves a longish drive, I can't help you on this one, Ruth. But someone here is going to be able to...

We always used Park Row Garage which in on Old Woolwich Road in Maze Hill.

They've always been really good. They will fix what needs doing on your car before they fail it so you don't need to pay twice :-)

Park Row Garage is wonderful, although I have a feeling that they do not actually do the MOTs, but take the car to be checked somewhere else. I have recently used the chap on the corner of Old Dover Road and Reynolds Place at the Standard, Direct Garage Services. Quick, efficient and very busy.

I would also recommend the Park Row outfit. They're very good about ringing up and checking you want work done before they go ahead and do it (I've had mechanics run up hundreds of pounds of work before getting the go-ahead).

Park Row are really good- so good that I'm adding my endorsement from a temporary stay in Australia. They do the MOTs on the premises(unless things have changed recently).

The two chaps at the small garage on Diamond Terrace are excellent, especially enthusiastic for cars of the jalopy variety. Diamond Terrace is wonderfully secluded and overdue a phantom visit.

Curious you should mention that, Anon. I'm currently trying to track down some more of a fascinating story about that very place. I utterly love walking around there - in fact it's so secluded that it somehow feels a bit like a private road.

I am currently drooling over that fabulous house for sale there. Sadly beyond a Phantom's means just now, but everyone can dream...

I'd like to recommend the Test Centre in Deptford. They only do MOTs, so have no interest in telling you that you need things doing if you don't. You only pay if you pass. They are also very efficient and friendly. http://www.thetestcentre.co.uk/

I used Riverside Garage in Rathmore Road, Charlton for the last 3 years. They do servicing, repairs and MOTs on the premises and my experience of using them has been good.

Peter at C&E Motors 020 8293 5000. Is based just off Norman Road after years in the old 'Skillion Centre' on Greenwich High Road. Always reliable.

I'd recommend Direct Garage on Reynolds Place, off Old Dover Rd. I've always been happy with what they've done for me.

On a similar note, could anyone recommend a good hand car-wash or valeting service in the Greenwich/Blackheath area?

DO NOT GO TO DIRECT GARAGE ON REYNOLDS PLACE, BLACKHEATH,SE3. They do not do there job properly. I needed new break pads and disc and I find out they only changed the pads and put them on the worn out disc. I found this out cause when I went to another mechanic the next day for m.o.t they failed m.o.t on that. Direct Garage have nothing to say about what they did. They are just a big lier and a cheat.

Mechanics at Direct Garage on Reynolds Place, Blackheath, are absolutly rubbish. Done an absolute bosh job to my car. When I confronted receptionist,(who never smiles and has no customer service experience whats so ever), well she was rude, mechanics think they done good job to my car, so they are denying doing a rubbish job. Will not refund my money. So I have lost out of £315 and can not afford to have car done again so because of Direct Garage I cant use my car and I have to take kids to school on buses which takes about 1 hour now cause traffic, and if I had my car it would take about 25 mins. Thanks for nothing Direct Garage.
