Warren mailed me yesterday to tell me he'd had a very unsatisfactory conversation with Willow Management who are in charge of the clocktower. He seems to have had a most unpleasant experience, just asking for permission to take a few photos - I can't begin to think they'd entertain all and sundry traipsing up there for Open House Day. I'm not under the illusion that this company are the slightest bit interested in local goodwill or public relations.
I have heard the building is actually empty, which makes me think that at some point it will be up for rent. Maybe we should all go and 'view' the property
en masse...
I don't actually go out
looking for a hiding for nothing. I'm going to switch my attentions to The Observatory roof and the Power Station. Watch this space...

That's a real shame to hear, they don't know what a gem they are sitting on. Thanks for your dogged persistance though. If you havnt seen it already there is a wonderful picture of the whole building taken just after completion in the 30's with appropiate olde worlde cars outside on the RIBA website. The observatory roof would be a great view, I had a look through their telescope the other night to see Mars and the moon as part of their Adult Learning scheme which was quite spectacular!(they have some more dates in March to see Saturn ) But hey now the power station with access to the old dock thing on the river or just inside the turbine hall ( I'll take either ) yes that would be special. Persistance pays , I'm told.
I'd be up for a 'viewing' with you.
Normal questions can be asked: 'What are the neighbours like?', 'Is the roof sound?', 'Are they planning to build trillions of new properties in the area and increase the traffic by 300%?'...oh...
ps: Isn't there a Supergrass song lyric that goes:
You ate our chips
And you drank our Coke
Then you showed me Mars
Through your telescope
?
But I can
See the moon
When I'm sitting down
In my front room.
The power station may be very tricky. Due to the power stations role as a back-up generator for the Underground, access permissions to the site are decided on by the police themselves. I attempted to get inside for a TV documentary and, whilst EDF (the current owners) were as helpful as they could be, was not allowed over the threshold, never mind into the building.
I hope you have better luck.
