What's On?

Folks - I want to ask you a question. When I started this blog, I was really sure that the one thing I didn't want it to turn into was some kind of Parish Noticeboard with bring-and-buy sales, bob-a-job weeks and pensioners' tea parties advertised on it. I have always seen this as my personal blog - and I don't really want to dilute my own tedious opinions with a What's On section.

But people keep sending me stuff - and some of it (not all, by any means, ahem,) looks really interesting. I'm wondering - if I created a second blog "The Phantom's Parish News" or similar, click-through-able from this site, would it be useful? Or are there already plenty of places to find out what's on?

I'll warn you - I'm poor at going out and finding events - this would merely be based on things I notice and think look good - or things selected from stuff people send me - and not everything I'm sent either - I'd only include it if I thought it looked really different and good. And I'm rubbish at HTML so don't expect graphs or grids or diaries - or indeed any funky add-ons. But with those caveats - is it appealing, or a waste of time?

Definitely appealing, but my interest and contribution would be largely child-orientated. There seems to be a lot of cross over - ice skating, panto, etc..

I think its a great idea, which will leave the main blog for your wonderful critiques.

Yes please GP, I think that would be really great.

I think a good 'what's on?' site combining reviews and listings would be a fantastic thing for Greenwich. My only worry is for the Phantom, who will surely be inundated once she(/he!) starts to invite listings.

On the other hand, this could be the start of a pocket money earning Phantom spin-off. In a previous life I lived in Oxford (similar mix of outlandish buildings, students and independant arts scene) where there is a great little site called 'Daily Information' which everyone used as a notice board. (http://www.dailyinformation.co.uk/whatson/index.html).

Greenwich needs something similar.

maybe the Newshopper or Mercury will host the site for you? Or better still, pay you for your work.

HA-bloody-ha. Sorry - there's no way that the News Shopper or the Mercury would pay for anything!

Besides - I like being independent - being the meglomaniac I am I don't want anyone calling the shots on my blog - I truly enjoyed not being 'owned.'

The Inspector was considering something of this ilk - maybe a sort of wiki-What's On thingy - dunno what happened to that.

I confess that what I actually like doing is what I'm doing now - taking a subject and worrying it to death. I don't particularly want to do a whats on - but I don't mind doing a 'selected highlights' page, if that appeals.

Aren't we all being a little self-indulgently reliant on TGP here? What makes the blog itself is the straight-talking honest observations, titbits, reviews and trivia. A What's On page is evidently needed somewhere, but how about it's a more collaborative effort - giving TGP to focus primarily on his/her own musings? I'd be happy to set up such a blog in which anyone who wished to join as an administrator would be most welcome to do so, and we'd through in anything that catches our eye? Needless to say it would hardly be definitive, but from what I've seen on the comments section of this blog, there are enough Greenwich enthusiasts (and occasionally, wonderfully, it goes beyond enthusiasm to obsession) hovering around this page to make a real go of it. What do you reckon?

Dear Phantom,
I think the weirder stuff the better. Who would have thought I can go and watch cauliflowers being planted...Fantastic!

Aw - gee. well- as I say, I'm absolutely not wedded to the idea of me doing it. Also Inspector Sands has mentioned something similar - so I think he would be ideal to host such a thing. Inspector - are you there?

How about linking up with the Greenwich Gazette to host/promote something together?

I think it would be great to have a easy source of Greenwich happenings! I'd be happy to contribute where needed.

Well, Knit Nurse, that's sort of my point. Greenwich Gazette already does a what's on thingy - so frankly I'd feel a bit like I was reinventing the wheel if I joined in. If it's useful I'm happy to give it a go - but in many respects I'd rather stick to what I'm doing now...

I would love it!! To be honest you're the only thing I read every day as sitting down with the local paper is a magnet for the children to really neeeeed something NOW or the cat to plonk her butt on (she does that with the keyboard too though). Obviously I'd be a market for any of andrekabu contributions.

Fingers crossed MJM
