Teletubby Sainsburys

I couldn't resist going to have a quick poke around the 'new' Sainsburys just now. Though to be honest, apart from their having given it a lick of paint, a few new shelving units and moving everything around I can't see much different. It does look a bit brighter - but there's nothing particularly stand-out.

They've re-turfed the green bit outside and re-clad the wood bit, taken away the electric car points so that more 4x4s can pretend to be disabled while they get some fags and - well, that's about it.
I'm rather disappointed to see that they haven't taken the opportunity to close-in the freezer section. There are one or two more freezers with doors, but much of the frozen fare is still open. I mean - what the heck are we doing switching off lights and saving carrier bags when every supermarket in Britain leaves its fridge doors wide open? (yeah, yeah, China, power-stations yada, yada... but I still think there's a point in there somewhere.)

I didn't stay long - I'd only gone in to get some milk and be nosey, but I confess I'm pleased it's back. I know you should do you shopping locally - and I do try, honest. Fish from the fishmonger, fruit & veg from the farmers market or the Creaky Shed, cheese from the cheesemonger etc etc - but some things you just need a good old supermarket for.

The one thing Sainsburys being shut did remind me was how much I hate Asda. I have never encountered so many angry people shouting and swearing at each other as I do in that bloomin' store- and I've seen near-fisticuffs in the car park.

Sainsburys drives me mad from time to time. But actually I'm quite pleased it's back. So shoot me...

Well my family have shopped in Charlton ASDA for about 3 years, and we have never seen any of the behaviour you describe - so perhaps it's you :p.
I must admit we do see a lot of very overweight and unattractive folk though.....

Oh the Asda is a terrible evil place!!! Everytime I go there I get super angry and feel like hurling oranges at the staff and customers! It feels like everyone leaves their common sense at the door! Good old Sainsbury's. I'm glad it's back too. Even if it never has any stock. I've got to the point now where I can do 90% of my shopping by using the Creaky Shed, Drings, The Fishmongers, Cheeseboard and So Organic, so luckily Sainsbury's don't get as many of my pennies as they used to!

Alan Coren: "The only thing I know about Sainsbury's is that it keeps the riff-raff out of Waitrose".

So Lula - YOU'RE the angry person!

I had no idea that supermarkets brought out such strong feelings in people. Keep meaning to visit Waitrose at a weekend - never make it somehow.

Yep, am the awful angry person bumping into people with my trolley!
I have to say that I've started getting my shopping delivered now - I've decided the £5 cost is worth it to keep my sanity in check at the weekends!

The Fishmongers, Drings, Cheeseboard, Creaky Shed plus the Co-op for milk. We've got the supermarket down to once a month (or once a day in the week before Christmas!).

That ASDA is truly foul. I have never seen such a badly designed car park. No wonder people are down to their last nerve by the time they get inside!

at the other end of the ASDA car park - down by TK Max - they've redesigned the exit so you HAVE to go round by McDonalds and look as if you are one of their customers

I'm in agreement - asda in Charlton is abominable. When you can't afford to buy all your bits at various fishmongers, butchers and cheeseshops, Lidl can be quite good!

As we live within 5 minutes walk of ASDA, its the place we go to get most of our shopping, saves getting into a traffic jam around the retail park. I think ASDA has improved a lot in the last few years, the range and quality you get is pretty good. The fish counter isn't the best and okay the people aren't always pleasant but jesus go to Harvey Nicks if you want to rub shoulders with a better class!
IMHO the experience you have in a supermarket all depends on what time you get in there - 4pm on a Saturday is never good!
I visited the new Sainsburys on 'opening night' and really liked it. However, at 5pm on Saturday most of the veg section was decimated and shelves were empty in some cases.I overheard one woman say 'This is the worst organised shop I've ever been in'. We walked out as they didn't have what we'd gone in there for.
IMHO you can't beat Morrisons for meat and fish - they have an amazing selection.

the Royal Hill experience is lovely but with the exception of Dring's is strictly for those who don't have to watch the cash too closely.
I do agree with you on the subject of supermarket fridge doors tho...it would be so easy wouldn't it?...I can't see why they don't do it, in a margin driven industry it would save them a packet in lecky bills even before they consider the future of the planet...

I has to be a purely financial decision - they must have worked out that the amount they lose due to people being too lazy to open a fridge door is more than the amount they lose through higher electicity bills. They all do it (save Iceland - hooray for them) - which makes me think that legislation would be the only solution.

M+S could do it, and then frame a smug advert around it ...'not just fridge doors, but super smooth ergonomic fridge doors blah blah' ...actually am I the only grumpy old bugger out there who hates those ads?

No you can count me in on it too. But then I hate all adverts so much that I would rather tape everything so I can fast forward through them than actually watch programmes as they go out for the first time.

Mind you. That dancing robot car's quite good...
