Sunday Roasts
Just wondering if you have any recommendations for the best place in Greenwich for a sunday roast?
The Phantom replies:
If I'm absolutely honest I haven't actually found the "ultimate" Sunday Roast in Greenwich, but opinions differ and I suspect we'll have quite a few contributions from everyone on this one...
The King William Restaurant (http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2007/01/king-williams-restaurant.html) under The Painted Hall does a traditional Sunday Lunch, but, despite its being run by Leiths, it's not my favourite. I keep meaning to try it again, as it's a good venue and I can't help thinking that it should be better than I have found in the past.
I was in The Vanbrugh yesterday lunchtime (full review to come at some point.) Their roast is quite respectable; the meat (several options) is well-sourced and you get a good plateful. I wasn't completely wild about the potatoes - I like my spuds really crispy - but the Yorkshire pud was very good. Their Christmas menu looks appealing.
I haven't actually tested The Guildford's Sunday Roast but I have had other food from there (again - there's a review to be had soon - I'm rather behind with posting at the moment) and I've been impressed with it.
SE10 (http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2007/10/se10.html) lists Sunday Roast with all the trimmings, but I hesitate to recommend it as I had a very ho-hum experience last time I went (I haven't tried the roast though - might actually be quite a triumph. It's that sort of place.)
I do really like The Yacht (http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2007/01/yacht.html)- though once again I haven't actually tried their roast.
Ditto The Hill (there's a review in the Eating Out section but even I can't find it!!)
and The Ashburnham Arms (again - there's a review in the Eating Out section - you'll have to scroll down. I really need to sort this site out!!)
If you don't mind driving, Danson Stables (http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2007/07/danson-stables.html)is very 'Sunday pub lunch-y' - combine it with a visit to Danson House http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2007/03/danson-house_19.html)
If you're just looking for Sunday lunch rather than a traditional roast, you could do a lot worse than Inside (http://www.thegreenwichphantom.co.uk/2007/05/inside.html)
I now await with glee everyone else chipping in with their suggestions...

I really like the Cutty Sark for their pub lunches. Not only in it on the river but it has good roast potatoes and nice fat Yorkshire Puddings. Yummy!

I did mean the Cutty Sark Pub - not the poor ole ship that's being patched up.
The Yacht gets my vote (though the atmosphere has changed in there since the refurb). Great view too, if you're lucky enough to get a table by the window.
We had lunch at the King William restaurant under the Painted Hall last week - it was truly truly awful. No choice as far as I could tell, the courses just arrived. Roast lamb with 4 squares of vegetables, I think one was a potatoe. It was fully booked by a couple of large parties, nevertheless I shall never go back again
The two course Sunday roast at the Ashburnham Arms is great value - and they have great beer.
If you get in early enough the Princess of Wales over the heath does a pretty good roast dinner of epic proportions.
My family and I always go for the roasts at The Plume of Feathers... fantastic (great starters and beer too).
One of the choices for Sunday lunch at Inside is a roast, which was very good when i was there about a month ago. Similarly Chapter 2 in Blackheath offers an excellent roast as a chioce on Sundays.
I had the Sunday Roast at The Hill a few weeks back, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Try the Green Pea at Hardy's Pub, Trafalgar Road. Not had the roast but everything else there is fantastic, especially the lamb shanks and such good value too. Not something you can usually say about Greenwich eateries.
I'll second the Sunday roast at Princess of Wales over in Blackheath.
I'm a fan of the Cutty Sark too - especially after a walk along the river to build up an appetite.
Never had the roast at the Princess of Wales but if it's up to the standard of their other food it should be good.

The Pilot on the peninsular used to do a great roast, altho I haven't been there for a couple of years but I hope living in the shadow of David Beckham's ego hasn't spoilt it....
We had a really good three course fixed price lunch at Rivington on Sunday 25th November (£18.50). Apparently the sunday menu always includes a roast option and the beef we had this week was excellent.Busy - so need to book.
Plume of Feathers without doubt.
The slow roast Pork is to die for
The best roasts in my opinion are definitely The Union and The Vanbrugh. The Union's is especially beautifully presented but not the largest.
Had an auwful roast at the Yacht at the weekend...

the yacht can float out to sea as far as I'm concerned.
went there a couple of sundays ago and it was truly dreadful. meal started off well, in so far as we managed to get a lovely table over looking the river. but when we went to the bar to order we were told by a snotty teenage boy that we couldn't order for another 20 minutes as they were busy with a big function. when we went back to order at the said time, there was a gigantioc queue and after a long wait we were greeted by surly staff and a card machine that didn't work properly. when the food did arrive it was laughable. i had around 5 chips, 20 peas and a few mediocre bits of scampi thrown onto a huge over sized plates. it looked like a children's portion.
when we complained we were basically laughed at and told 'we don't serve american portions here!'. well what a crap experience. the staff, food and service were a joke.
Tut! And I blame the owners for employing people who are so ignorant. There is no excuse for this kind of treatment. I confess I've never had that kind of experience there - but maybe I've been lucky enough not to coincide with a funtion. If this is how they deal with their regulars on function days then there is something very wrong. The regulars are their bread and butter - lose them and they lose everything.
The Hill does a fantastic Sunday roast. The atmosphere and service are both welcoming and warm.

Hardy's / Greenpea... Without a doubt. Great food and great value. So much so I'm off for X-mas day dinner!
You must try the roast pork at the Plume of Feathers. I never order roast pork because it has a tendancy to be dry. Their slow roast belly pork is certainly not - along with wonderful crackle. They also do a great potted makeral starter. Great open fire. I'm a fickle chef that can't find anywhere else in Greenwich to match up to it.
The Hill gets my vote. We had a great Roast there last Sunday. Well priced too.
