About Me
- Name: The Greenwich Phantom
- Location: Greenwich, London, United Kingdom
Greenwich is one of the coolest "uncool" places there is in London. It's not profoundly unfashionable - rather somewhere where it doesn't occur to people that there is anything more than a few museums, a nice park and the Cutty Sark. The really adventurous might know about the Trafalgar Tavern or venture out to Greenwich market on a Sunday afternoon, but essentially, Greenwich is still relatively undiscovered for one of the great regions of London. I adore Greenwich - but I'm not blind to its faults either. In this journal I take an affectionate but honest - at times brutally so - look, giving my own personal low-down on the things to do - and one or two of the things NOT to do in Greenwich. I am being unashamedly parochial here. I will talk about the tourist sites, of course - how could I not when we have a World Heritage Site on our doorstep - but also about the things which make our town great - the little things. Interesting vistas, cool shops, bizarre novelties and quirky one-offs which make this place buzz. Greetings, by the way, to all of you who have travelled with me from Livejournal - and thank you for making the journey.

it has a note in the window saying it's shut and thanks for the custom over the last year, something like that.
If it has closed, its not a moment too soon! Vile. Just vile.........
So the question of the day is - what will happen now? Will Greenwich Inc rebrand or just leave it to its fate?
What would you like to see happen to this place? Go back to being a classic old boozer with The Cricketers above the door(that will take a fair bit of recreation - they ripped most of it out to create the Powder Monkey) or something else? A modern pub? A wine bar? A restaurant? A lap dancing club?
The Powder Monkey won't be missed by me. Only went in there once and that was enough. On a packed Saturday night last summer the upstairs rooms were like being at a party which had been gatecrashed by thugs and their overly made up, short skirted shop-girl girlfriends.....Bring back the old days of the Rose and Crown and the Gloucester before Greenwich Inc sanitised them to death. There is a gap in the market for a decent gay pub in Greenwich, the trouble is, does anyone at Greenwich Inc know what that is?
I should point out that the Rose & Crown is no Greenwich Inc...
aha.. that message is for me....
is it still there? anyone remember the hotmail address....quite a long story, as it happens....
Oh Carl - I knew this would happen! It sort of didn't feel 'right' to take an email address meant for someone else so I didn't. Let's hope it's still there...
I am intrigued by your 'long story...'
A rather ominous sign has appeared in the window, heralding the arrival of the W*Lounge -- and promising no less than three floors of fun and funk.
Wonder if they'll bother fixing the toilets this time around?
Personally, I think the film 'Beautiful Thing' has a lot to answer for. When I was still married (long story) I saw the film and the scene where the two boys go to their first gay pub which was set at the Gloucester. It seemed to depict Greenwich as a place with a wonderful gay embrace. Finally out and proud I got to Greenwich and find nothing like it. Maybe the clue was the shot of Routemaster going the wrong way up King William Street - that's the movies for you.
