Friends of East Greenwich Pleasaunce Time Capsule

Now here's one you don't see every day...

The FOEGP have been given some cash by Greenwich Hospital (let's not look too deeply into why they've done this...) and have decided to create a time capsule to be buried in East Greenwich Pleasaunce (filled on Trafalgar Day - 20th Oct) to reflect life in 2007. It will stay buried for 150 years.

Its about the size of a large shoebox, made of lead and will have a commemorative plaque made by Greenwich Mural Workshop.

The question is - what to put in it???

Kate, who's organising this, says "We have roped in the kids at Halstow. One of our committee members wants to put in his Rolling Stones at the o2 ticket, and someone else is going to make a guided walking tour on DVD."

They've very kindly asked me to record some of this blog for posterity (I'm most flattered) - but that's only going to be the size of a memory keystick. So what else should go in a little box as a true reflection of Greenwich Life in 2007?

Let's not go for cheap laughs now...

"but that's only going to be the size of a memory keystick" -- so, er, how are they going to read that in 20 years. You would be a bit disappointed if you opened a time capsule from 1987 now and found a C64 cassette tape in there containing someone's writing! ;-)

Yeah - you make a fine point - but if I printed that lot off it would fill up the whole thing. NAyone got any long-term storage suggestions?

Microfiche! That'll never die.

The Greenwich Market consultation brochure might raise a hollow laugh in 150 years.

Nice to see Greenwich Hospital has remembered its old burial ground, anyway - wonder if it'll remember it next year, or the year after?

Wot's all this about not being able to read it in 20 yrs time....blah, blah. Pathetic, of course they will (like WE can't play 78rpm gramophone records). If they can't figure it out then it will mean that society has collapsed and nobody will be bothered about local history anyway, more like keeping their heads above water and fending off tribes of feral chav's that have evolved to inherit the earth.

I agree with anonymous 17.51: one little CD/DVD isn't going to take up much space so it's worth a shot I reckon.

My neighbour's original PARCHMENT deed to his house, which he bought for a couple thousand quid back when. He's a member of FOEGP. I wonder if they've thought to ask him.

How about a Greenwich Card, a laminated picture of The Dome, a laminated beer mat from The Greenwich Union and a 2012 Olympics logo badge.

They could also consider including a signed copy of Will Self's 'The Book of Dave'.

Delighted to hear that will be a phantasmogorical inclusion (readable in 150 years time, or otherwise).
