Creekside Development

Blimey - it seems that development hell is all around us today. James tells me that the Creekside development has begun. He says:

I live up on creek road and the demolition of the old universal tyres building, hobsons and the like have begun. Expect their carcasses to still be present till about jan 08; at that point, the greenwich mini work yards will also have gone too. (some occupants have already left).

James is going to document the process with his camera. You can (literally) keep up with developments here:

Exciting times - but you do know it's going to be luxury flats replacing them?! ;-)

Things are going to be getting rather TALL in this part of Greenwich in the next five years. It's meant to provide a 'gateway' to Maritime Greenwich. What on earth does that mean?

I don't have anything at all against new luxury flats - just gated communities.

Ah - that's what it is - the "gateway" to Greenwich is exactly that - the pretty, touristy bit of Greenwich is being turned into one enormous gated Community, flanked by "gateways at either end - The Creekside at Deptford, the heart of East Greenwich at the other. Scary.

Let's hope the enlightened councils (both Lewisham and Greenwich) have made the usual provision for local infrastructure... So how much development do we now have in this area - Greenwich Reach (500 homes say), the Seager Distillery (f*ck knows, but it'll have a large tower), Creekside Village, Creekside (Greenwich High Road side), to say nothing of the new Haddo Estate, Lovells Wharf, the East Greenwich development and the Peninsula. And any new hospitals? Schools? Roads? None that I've heard of. Do the planning inspectors take bungs, I wonder... Depressing though it is to say it, I don't think I'll want to live here much longer, and I never thought I'd think that. There's only so much high density redevelopment an area can take and I think that Greenwich is already creaking at the seams. This leaves a terrible legacy for future generations.
