Olivers Extension?
"I was wandering past Olivers the other day and saw a planning application posted outside. Fearing the worst (particularly with the old Spread Eagle antiques shop looking ominously stripped out and ready for 'improvement') I was relieved to read that the bar just seems to be
expanding somewhat. Can you shed any light on what's going on, both there and in the old shop?"
The Phantom Replies:
I saw this notice myself and have no idea what's going on. I'm sure someone here does, though. Please put Jim and myself out of our collective misery.
While we're about it, a rumour reached my phantasmagorical ears that a second fishmongers was to open in Greenwich, in Royal Hill. Frankly I hope it's not true. I don't believe there's room for two fishmongers in such a small area and if we're not careful they might steal each other's thunder and end up both closing at the same time. The Fishmonger Ltd was brave enough to stick its neck out when no other bugger would touch the idea. They deserve our loyalty rather than some Johnny-come-lately who's seen the concept works and thinks they'll go for the easy location. What we need is a truly decent bakers - or one of a host of other lovely shops (votes for the return of the sausage shop are never far away from my mailbox) not doublings of the same thing.
Phew. Glad I got that off my chest. Blimey, I'm an angry Phantom today. Must be the change of season...

a little protectionist eh phantom ?I could almost do all my food shopping in one place if we had a fishmongers, not sure where it would go though unless one of the other shops goes....
‘What we need is a truly decent bakers’
This guy recommends one!

Not really protectionist. More realistic. I truly don't think that there's enough custom for two shops. What bothers me is that they'd split the custom and both end up shut, leaving us with nothing.
Ah - yes, Mr/Ms Bushwhacker - Boulangerie Jade is excllent indeed. But one in Greenwich would be good too - and yes, I do think that there would be enough custom for that.
Phantom, don't think there's any need to worry - my understanding is that the fishmonger opening on Royal Hill _is_ The Fishmonger Ltd. I heard he's trying to benefit from the busy weekend trade of Dring's, The Creaky Shed and The Cheese Board by opening up on a Saturday in the empty unit next to Dring's.
As a West Greenwich dweller I'm looking forward to it!
Wow - expanding already after 9 months - that's ambitious. well - good luck to him if he can do it. I suppose if you're off to Billingsgate for one batch of kippers, you might as well shop for two...
I heard the same from the fishmonger himself although he suggested it wasn't the unit next to Drings but one just round the corner. Either way I am pretty sure it's the same man.
Yes, I can confirm that the branch opening on the Royal Hill is a Fishmonger Ltd shop - mu understanding is that there is a rather large demand for deliveries to homes in West Greenwich, so they thought they'd open a shop instead!
This is good news! Although if it isn't the unit in between Drings and The Cheese Board I'm not sure where else it can be? Is there another unit round the corner? Well it's great news anyway and I'm glad it is the Fishmonger people rather than someone else. They do the world's best smoked salmon btw. Expensive but worth it.
Hi It's space to the rear of the cheeseboard (entrance circus street)
olivers is excavating another room underground - making it a lil' bigger. It's such a nice venue - so i can't wait!

Just as long as he doesn't redecorate the bit he has already. I love that faded grandeur...
Olivier is awaiting a licence, I beleive, as it counts as another building.
Sorry. That's 'believe'
Olivers have extended by knocking through into part of 8 Nevada Street.
