Latest Greenwich Card Deal

Hmm. I am really beginning to wonder why on earth I bother having a Greenwich Card at all. I either never know about the deals - or they're so bloomin' stingy or restrictive that it's nigh-on impossible to benefit from them at all.

Take this latest "deal" that's arrived in my inbox. If I just happen to be one of the first 500 people to email a secret address yesterday, AND then bowl up at the 02 box-office tomorrow lunchtime at exactly 1.00pm then I might just get a half price ticket to the Tutankhumun exhibition.

So what if I work - even if it's a low-paid job? What if I can't get there on the dot of 1.00pm. What if I'm number 501?

Tough.

I am really struggling to think of anything other than the odd cheap swim that I have ever had out of the Greenwich Card system. I (mistakenly, apparently) was under the impression that one of the deals residents got for having financially supported the Dome for all the years it was dead was that they would get at least some kind of ticket discount on gigs and events. Seems that if we're not one of the first 500 or if we just can't make it to North Greenwich for a half-hour window, the rest of us can whistle.

Does anyone think that the Greenwich Card is really worthwhile for anything other than the odd gym session (for which I have a separate Greenwich Card anyway)?

Pah.

I signed up months ago to get the option to buy tickets for the exhibition early, and it appears that even these are sold out!!! I've been trying all day!

Actually you can get discounts at a huge number of places in the borough - shops, restaurants, major attractions etc etc. There is a full list on the council website although I don't know how up to date it is. Some of them are up to 20% discount, which is not to be sniffed at. I agree that this particular promotion seems rather badly organised, but on the whole I think the Greenwich card is a great idea, especially since it's so cheap in the first place! It's one of the things (probably the only thing) I really miss about Greenwich Council now I live next door in Lewisham!

I never seem to be in the shops that do the discounts. I need to get more organised and carry a list with me.

I've been trying to book pre-registered tickets too. Weekends, despite being much more expensive, seem to be most choc-a-bloc (understandably) and some don't seem to be available at all, but weekdays at awkward times are still ok. Keep trying!

Can't say I'm particularly wowed by the exhibition, but it does go on until 30 August, so I'm not in a huge rush. Pal up with a Credit Suisse employee, I say, since they're sponsoring the shebang (and CS employees get lots of Dome perks).

The Greenwich Card is a great, but very badly-handled idea - was a bit of a secret until the Dome opened and you had to have one to get in for free... as I remember, the list of shops offering discounts is a right old random grab-bag, and they don't even promote it in their own premises. But like all the council's attempts at communicating with the public, it's a bit of a fiasco.

Knit Nurse, you should try getting a card anyway, the dozy sods probably don't know one end of SE8 from another.

My company sponsors the exhibition or the dome or something so we got sent details of the employee discount on offer - £2 off a £25 ticket and only valid at certain times... not much of a deal really!

yes inspector, I think you may be right! Damn, just think I could have been getting my weekly swim for 25p less for the last two years - hell, that really adds up you know!

I have never been able to get discounted tickets at the Dome. And I have tried many times!!
Not sure the Card is very useful for these promotions!

As many of you appear to be so disinchanted with the Greenwich card, can I suggest you try the Ukwebsaver card instead. It started to appear in Blackheath and Greenwich businesses at the beginning of August and its run by a local franchisee who claims to work hard at promoting the card in the area. Not only can you save money at businesses in Blackheath & Greenwich, but you can use it at selected outlets all over the U.K. and Ireland too. In addition, there are online savings to be had with many national companies as well and all for just £4.99 a year membership. www.ukwebsaver.com
