Summer Courses at Greenwich Community College, Royal Hill
I have tried unsuccessfully to enrol on a couple of the jewellery making courses, only to discover the entire Summer Programme has been cancelled; due to lack of interest. Who knew???
The courses are poorly advertised and I received a call today from someone close to the organisation that there is political manoeuvring behind the scenes. A deliberate attempt to keep interest and attendance at a bare minimum. In the long run selling off the building and land without any protest. I'm sure a well placed advertorial in the Guide or a few flyers delivered to Greenwich residents would see an increase in interest. Phantom what are your thoughts and has anyone else got any views on the maladministration of this little gem?
The Phantom replies:
You have a point, GM. I didn't know anything about any Summer courses - I would have been rather interested in attending one or two myself. But what is in it for Greenwich Community College to scupper their own building? I can see that the place is extremely well positioned for luxury-flattening - but why would the staff who run these courses collude in cutting out their own livelihood?
There seems to be something rum going on here - and I'm not quite sure what. And I'm concerned on a bigger level too - one of Greenwich's greatest problems is not that things aren't going on, not that 'free' places are available - but that no one knows about them. I generally try to keep an ear to the ground about events and courses - but I'd have said that a good half of the things on offer are so poorly advertised that they just don't get attended.
A worrying thing indeed.

I think the Community College does a very poor job of advertising itself at all, let alone its summer courses. I lived nearby for several years without realising what went on in there. When I decided to attend a photography course I only found out about the one there in Floodlights, along with courses all across London. And only when I went there did I find information about the multitude of courses they offer. They could and should do so much more to promote what is an outstanding establishment.
While well intentioned, the college does seem to be incredibly badly run and organised. Some of my friends have been attending the weekly knitting classes, but have become disillusioned by the bad organisation and lack of information.
I totally agree, m32, that they could easily attract more students from the immediate area just by distributing a few flyers.
They'd have attracted me, for starters. I didn't realise they did courses at Royal Hill - I thought they were at inconvenient parts of the borough. And now's there's nothing on at all over the summer? I BET there's something I would have liked to do. Pah.
This a list from the cancelled Summer School:
Ceramics - struded ceramics
Jewellery
Inspired by Life Sculpture
Photography - Location Portraiture
Silversmithing
Textiles - lace making
Textiles - machine embroidery
Even if they delivered plyers and/or the part-time prospectus to the immediate vicinity they would have had plenty of takers I'm sure....sigh.....
I used to take my 3 year old to carer and child pottery classes, which have been going for years, apparently. They were run expertly by a guy called Ray and if I'm anything to go by, the parents learnt as much as the children. They were cancelled at the end of the summer term and apparently will not be coming back.
Good God - what is going on here?
I fear the worst....
I only heard about the Community College in the last couple of years, primarily from the Stitch n' Bitch club. There seem to be so many amazing classes. As soon as I have my littlest out of nappies, I'd love to show up for a jewellery, photography or even a machine embroidery class. They sound really cool. Shame my interest seems to be piqued a little too late.
Hi - I tried for a couple of YEARS to register on summer courses (mainly photography) but never got a response by via email - even though I got a nice automated email from the Principal saying someone would contact me shortly no one ever did.. and the phone was never answered. After a while I just gave up! I would be interested to hear if anyone actually works there??
