The Golden Compass

Kratch says:

So exciting: have just seen the trailer for the Golden Compass (Amber Spyglass as was). Greenwich featured twice in the trailer. I’ve attached a still from it so you can see how one of the bits looks. Otherwise, go and have a look at the whole thing on http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/

The Phantom adds:

Yes - I noticed that too - the Harry Potter trailers, if I recall... Yet another instance of Greenwich standing in for somewhere else - Oxford, I seem to remember. It was standing in for Bristol in a DVD of Starter for Ten I saw last week but the weirdest instance I've heard of was in Shanghai Knights (or was it Noon?) Anyone know of an even stranger place Greenwich has pretended to be in return for cash?

Back to the Golden Compass. I'm told The Amber Spyglass is the best of the three, and it looks sumptous. A real Christmas movie. Of course I shall be going...

I work on the site of the Old Royal Naval College. Film crews turn up every couple of months - Nicolas Cage most recently. I think the buildings are usually used as stand-ins for some part of whitehall (or even buckingham palace!).

Don't you think it would be lovely to see a few more films not just filmed in but SET in Greenwich?

As I said on a previous post a long time ago....Birdman! Someone should make a film of it.

Daniel Craig must like the place, I saw him trying to assasinate someone by the Observatory in Layer Cake recently.

I must admit I'm not so sure about the trailer. I was hoping for something far more mysterious and creepy than this crystal clear effects fest. More like Excaliber than The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. But then I'm the only one I know who actually rates that film so what do I know?

Phantom, were you at the preview of Atonement last night? I'd have thought that would be the kind of thing you'd be really into.

I'm still trying to summon up the stomach for Birdman. But as my list of Greenwich books gets smaller, I guess I'm going to have to get reading at some point...

Really enjoyed it, just thought it was laid on a little thick in places, especially the music.

Looked gorgeous throuhgout and McAvoy is just superb.

I saw the trailer (was totally downmarket last night and saw "The Bourne Ultimatum" instead) and it looked amazing - if a little, ahem, grim (hardly surprising, of course.) I do want to make Kiera K eat properly though...

Talking of films, did you see this one:

Greenwich Meantime?

It came out a few years ago; I can hardly remember what happens in it actually, but I seem to remember locations include Blackheath Park, The Standard, and the Ferrier.

There was some filming going on a couple of weekends ago in the gravel stretch opposite The Trafalgar. A cardboard 10 Downing street had taken the place of the row of trees, and there was one of those hard-to-place British character actors wandering about in a top hat.

The Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval college was featured in a couple of scene for Tomb Raider. I also saw a riot scene being filmed for Spooks there.

Royal hill and they now defunct Barley Mow were used for ITV's short-live soap opera Night And Day.

There always seems to be something being filmed in Gloucester Circus as well, lots of Victorian dramas

And who could forget the foot tunnel being blown to smithereens in 28 Weeks Later?

And some of Vera Drake was filmed inside a house on Egerton Drive I believe (although I could be wrong).

And there is a film coming out soon called Flood which was filmed and set in Greenwich Park. In fact you can see some pictures here: http://movies.uk.msn.com/features/galleries/flood_Stills.aspx?imageindex=4#5868052

How topical...

In fact Flood is supposedly out this week (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/film/article2222673.ece) but I find anywhere where it is showing... Bizarre
